  3. The importance of good health • Health is the combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well being. • Wellness is an overall state of well-being, or total health. • The health continuum

  4. Promoting your Health • Lifestyle factors – habits that affect peoples overall health, happiness, and longevity. • Life style factors include; • 8-10 hrs. of sleep each night • Starting the day with a healthy breakfast • Eating a variety of nutritious foods • Being physically active for 30 minutes each day • Maintaining a healthy weight • Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs • Abstain from sexual activity before marriage • Manage stress • Maintain positive relationships • Practice safe behaviors to prevent injury.

  5. Promoting your Health • Healthy People 2010 – a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. • The plan is revised every 10 years.

  6. Goals of Healthy People 2010 • Increase the quality and years of a healthy life for all Americans. • Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location.

  7. Becoming Health Literate • Health literacy – a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness.

  8. Health Literacy • A health literate individual; • Needs to be a critical thinker and problem solver • Needs to be a responsible and productive citizen • Needs to be a self-directed learner • Needs to be an effective communicator
