What is a Language Immersion Program? • Immersion is defined as a method of second language instruction in which the regular school curriculum is taught through the medium of the second language. • The second language is the vehicle for content instruction; it is not the subject of instruction.
Goals of an Immersion Program • To develop a high level of proficiency in the second language. • To develop a positive attitude toward those who speak the second language and their culture. • To develop English language skills equivalent with expectation for student’s age and abilities. • To gain skills and knowledge in the content area of the curriculum (benchmarks and standards)
How does Full Immersion work? • K-1st grade: All instruction is taught in the target language • 2nd grade: Instruction in English begins during the second semester • 3rd grade: English Instruction – Language Arts 30% of the time • 4th grade: English Instruction – Language Arts 40% of the time • 5th grade: English Instruction – Language Arts 50% of the time

DUAL IMMERSION KEY COMPONENENTS • Linguistic Balance, 50% of our students in each class are native Spanish speakers & 50 are proficient English speakers • Literacy skills are taught in both languages from the onset • There is not a strict separation of languages, teachers use “bridging” techniques e.g. cognates • Entry point is Pre-K rather than Kinder

PARENTAL SUPPORT REQUIREDHow do parents help? • Encourage, prepare students for school • Participate in PTA- membership usually exceeds 100% annually • Assist with teacher’s requests for help • Assist with Being There Experiences • Assist with class projects • Support Student homework needs • Serve on PTA and/or school committees • Attend school functions and meetings • Support school policies • Student ATTENDANCE- it is crucial to language acquisition
Application Process • Students MUST apply to attend • Students apply before Kindergarten year • All applications are due to ESC by March 2, 2012 • There will be a Parent Survey to be completed • Students will be taking an assessment
Student Selection Process • Parents are asked for a 6 year commitment • Selection will be completed by mid-April • Selected students will be invited to the schools’ Spring Festivals and to a special orientation meeting with Kindergarten teachers
