EL 3101 Book Review: The Wish List By Eoin Colfer. A PowerPoint presentation by Irsyad
Fragility of Life and Abstractness of Death • The main character (Meg Finn) was not spared from death despite her young age. A good example of how fragile life is; you could die at any time. (how’d she die? I’m not telling) • The writer managed to state this point not by making it a sad occasion, but as something that is action packed and grabs your attention (Eoin Colfer is, after all, famous for his work on action-packed Artemis Fowl.) • Let’s face it, no one is sure what happens after you die till you die. And when you die, you can’t tell other what you saw, because you’re dead. Though there are some theories, one of which is stated in the book…
A tunnel leading to heaven and hell? • Some people believe that when you die, you will enter a tunnel leading to either heaven or hell. • According to various sources, people who have near-death experiences have seen such a tunnel while they were unconscious. This might support the above theory, but it sure hasn’t convinced me yet. • (the concept of heaven and hell in this book are closely related to the believes of most religions such as Islam and Christianity.)
Child Abuse- • Meg Finn is one girl worthy of our sympathy. As the title of this slide suggests, she is a victim of child abuse. • Later on in the book, the author presents to us how she had managed to have her revenge against her abuser. • The writer most probably wrote this during the 1990s, when such cases of child abuse were common in this cruel world.
Friendship- • Another important point that is discussed is the friendship of the least likely of people. Meg Finn helps an old man do certain tasks on his Wish List with no intention of befriending him (or, even more so, the old man had no intention of befriending her, and for a very good reason). • Perhaps the author had a somewhat similar experience in his own life?
Details about the book • The book is very fast paced as the main character sets off to accomplish various tasks with her arch nemesis constantly on her trail. • Although this book deals with topics like heaven and hell, no knowledge of such topics is required. • The book is mostly written in the third person.
My Opinion • I would recommend this book to these people:- • People looking for a good read • Preteens and teens. • You
Final Say I have read this book a few times, and I must say it’s one of my favourites. If you fancy a good read (and if you’ve finished your homework), I strongly suggest that you read it. It’ll make you laugh out loud and it’ll make you burst into tears (but you’ll laugh more). Read this, if it’s the last thing you do. Rating: 5/5 (why review a book I don’t like?)
