College and Career Readiness • What does it mean to be college and career ready? • A student who is ready for college, career, or the workforce who can qualify for and succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses, or career-oriented training programs without the need for remedial or developmental coursework is considered college and career ready. • A student's interests and post-high school aspirations influence the knowledge and skills necessary to be ready for post-secondary studies.

  8. The role of the College and Career Readiness Counselor: • To create access to college and career pathways that promote implementation of personal goals that ensure the widest range of future life options in collaboration with the guidance counselors. • This will be created through: • Career Assessments • Job Shadowing Opportunities • Employability Skills Assessment • Internships • College Workshops • Scholarship Workshops • Test Preparation • Financial Aid Preparation • Post-secondary Institution Partnerships

  10. School Attendance • Students required to attend school regularly. • High attendance rate = higher achievement • Parents must communicate with school by calling the attendance hotline within 24 hours of an absence. (216-898-8901) • Extended absences should also be communicated with appropriate guidance counselor.

  11. Dress Code Highlights • Dress and appearance significantly contribute to a positive learning environment. • Attire should be appropriate and not cause a disruption to the learning environment. • Specific guidelines can be found in the student handbook. • Staff members may refer particular student cases to SMR (Student Management Room) or the grade level administrator.

  12. Electronic Devices • During the school day, the use of electronic devices will be determined by a “colored zone” in which student is located. • Green Zones- Includes hallways and cafeteria. Use of devices is permitted. • Yellow Zones- Includes any classroom, office, library or educational space. Use of devices are at the discretion of the adult supervisor. • Red Zones- Includes all locker rooms and restrooms. Use of devices is prohibited. • Violation of this policy may result in the device being confiscated.

Lockers • Lockers are the property of the Berea City Schools and are subject to searches if the administration or police have probable cause. • Lockers are assigned to each student. • Students are responsible for their school materials and personal property, thus lockers should be kept locked at all times. • Inoperable lockers should be reported to the Guidance Secretary.

  14. Berea - Midpark School Resource Officer Program • Agreement between the City of Berea and the Berea City School District. • Based on input from the City of Berea, school administration, faculty and students. • Primary Function: • Education • Crime Prevention • General Law Enforcement

  15. Academic Recognitions Cum Laude (“with honors”) 3.500 to 3.849 Magna Cum Laude (“with great honor”) 3.850 to 4.249 Summa Cum Laude (“with highest honor”) 4.250 or higher

Co-Curricular Activities • Become an active member of the community and Berea-Midpark High School. • Variety of clubs, activities and athletic teams listed on our website. • Club meeting dates are communicated on the morning announcements. • Please visit the Co-Curricular and Boosters Fair in our cafeteria.

  17. Athletic Eligibility • If you are an athlete, to be eligible to participate you must have a GPA of 1.5 or higher and have earned at least 2.5 credits from the preceding grading period. • Please direct any athletic questions throughout the year to Mr. Cistolo in the Athletic Department: (216) 898-8902

  18. Student Forms • Received in student packets and should be returned to 1st period teacher 8/21- 8/23/13. • Student census form will be distributed the second week of school. Parent please verify all information on IC prior to 8/23/13.

  19. Infinite Campus Parent Portal • On-line/Internet tool to assist parents in monitoring academic progress, transcript information, student attendance and fees currently owed. • Parents may use password information from previous school year or can obtain password information by visiting Mrs. Lippy or Ms. Gorey. • Parents may verify contact information from home using Infinite Campus or may access IC this afternoon in room 141.

  20. Student Drop-Off and Pick-up Location • Student drop-off is at the West side of the school in the large parking lot between BMHS and Finnie Stadium off Maple Street. No cars are permitted in the front of the building from 7:00-7:40 A.M. and 2:00-2:40 P.M. • All parent vehicles should exit near the tennis courts onto Maple Street. • Drivers should remain patient and plan ahead for inclement weather conditions that often cause delays and congestion in the parking lot.

  21. Bus Departures • Student buses will depart BMHS from both the front and rear of the building. Specific instructions will be given to students on the first day of school. • In front of the building near the flag pole • In the rear of the building near the baseball field and sports center.

  22. Student Parking • (3) Available Parking Lots • BMHS ($50.00) Roehm Athletic Complex (Free) St. Paul’s located on the corner of Eastland Road and Bagley Road ($50.00) • Senior applications accepted today during orientation and Monday, August 19, 2013 until 9:00 A.M. • Lottery will be conducted and seniors successful in the lottery will be able to purchase passes starting Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 12:00-3:00 P.M.

  23. Parking Pass Requirements • Priority given to part-time PSEO and Seniors. • Students must complete application for all parking areas. • All fees must be paid from previous school year.

  24. Additional Student Parking Passes • Remaining spaces available will be offered to other students within the first weeks of school following the same format as previously described.

  25. Instructional Fees • Full Time Students-$20 • Part Time Students-$10 • Activity Fee for Joining a Club-$10 • Athletic Fee-$80 per sport

  26. Federal Lunch Program • Applications can be obtained by visiting our district website and clicking on the tab “Services” and then clicking on “Nutrition Services. • Students who qualified last year for the program MUST reapply by the end of the first week of school. • Room 141 computer lab is available this afternoon for access.

Polaris Students • Students are excused from Polaris for specific times during the first week of school which will not count against your attendance record at Polaris. • Polaris students should pick-up handout outlining the first week procedures at the rear of the auditorium at the conclusion of the program.

Berea-Midpark High SchoolOpen House • Please join us for our open house on Thursday, September 5th at 6:30 pm. • Open house is geared toward all parents of students in grades 10-12. • Great opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, follow their daily schedule and experience Berea-Midpark High School.

  33. Presentation of our BMHS Fall Sports Uniforms in the Gymnasium from 3:45- 4:00 P. M.

  34. Booster Groups, Clubs and Local Vendors will be located in the cafeteria until 3:45P.M.
