Academic Intervention Services New York State(Section 4402 of the Education Law) • Academic Intervention Services (AIS) is additional instruction which supplements the instruction provided by the classroom teacher • It is one response to our district’s Response to Intervention(RtI) program
Academic Intervention Services New York State(Section 4402 of the Education Law) • AIS is intended to assist students who are at risk of not achieving the Common Core Standards in ELA and Math • It is made available to students with disabilities on the same basis as non-disabled students • It is a mandated program
Common Core StandardsMath Content Strands • Operations & Algebraic Thinking • Number & Operations • Measurement & Data • Geometry Areas of intensive focus are specifically defined for each content strand.
How do students qualify for Math services? • K-3: NWEA - a computer adaptive assessment and/or Teacher Recommendation • Gr. 4 & 5: NYS Math Test and/or Teacher Recommendations
Common Core StandardsEnglish Language Arts • Key Features of the Standards • Reading Text complexity and the growth of comprehension • Writing Text types, responding to reading and research • Speaking & Listening Flexible communication and collaboration • Language Conventions, effective use, and vocabulary
How do students qualify for ELA services? • K-1: Letter, Sound, and Sight Word Identification, Benchmark Assessment and/or Teacher Recommendation • Gr. 2-3: Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment and/or Teacher Recommendations • Gr. 4 &5: NYS ELA and/or Benchmark Assessments and/or Teacher Recommendations
NYS Performance Indicators • NY State has revised the definitions of Performance Levels on the ELA and Math Assessments • Students scoring at a level 2 are considered partially proficient in standards for their grade. • AIS services will be based on scale scores within Level 2
How are services provided? • Taught by a specialist with small groups of students • Classes generally meet several times a week in half hour sessions or twice a week in forty five minute sessions • “Pull out” or “Push in”
Home/School Contact • Progress Reports • Parent Conferences • Notes, Phone calls • Parent Advisory Meeting
Helping at Home • Reading and Writing Help: • Reading for at least 15 minutes a day • Keep reading to your child, even when he/she can read independently! • Fluency • High Frequency words • Comprehension activities • Writing opportunities
Helping at Home • Math Help: • Review basic facts • Examine number relationships • Compare numbers • Consider part/whole relationships • Talk about math: at home, at the grocery store, etc.
