  2. Activity 3: Standards Based Grading • Purpose: to explain how Standards-Based Grading fits into fulfilling Decatur’s vision statement. Also…to see some instructional strategies in action: • close reading • Socratic Seminar • 4 point proficiency scale • formative assessment poster

  3. Proficiency Scale Example • Standard used for this activity (as an example) • COE Reading • PS6 Informational Thinking Critically • LT3 Extends information beyond the text by explaining generalizations OR drawing conclusions to demonstrate understanding of the text.

  4. Close Reading Activity • (see the top of your text) • Guiding Question: • In what ways does Patricia L. Scriffiny’s ideas in “Seven Reasons for Standards-Based Grading” fit Decatur’s vision statement of “every student prepared for success in high school and beyond”?

  5. While reading, mark the text as follows: • Write questions in the margins • Underline interesting/important ideas worth discussing • Place a * next to parts of the text that help answer the guiding question. After reading, briefly share out some ideas with your table group.

  6. Socratic Seminar • Inner Circle: • Share ideas • Refer to the text • Continue to mark the text • One person speaks at a time • Outer Circle: • Take notes • Continue to mark the text • No outside conversations • If applicable, add your ideas to the discussion at appropriate time.

  7. Post Discussion Debrief • Inside Circle: Write a response to the guiding question on your post it. Place post it on poster in its appropriate space. • Outside Circle: • Write a response to the guiding question on your notes/at the bottom of the text.

  8. If time permits…. • Share with your table – what worked with this activity for you? What elements can you see using in your classroom? What elements can you see changing to use in a different way in your classroom?

  9. Please pick up your folder from the crate in the front. • Tara is using these to provide ongoing individual communication through in-service days, data days, and staff meetings.

  10. Activity 4: Homework and Reassessment • Purpose: articulate how to use the homework and reassessment policies in instructional practices. • At your table, complete the homework and reassessment T Chart: • Complete individually • Then, share in your table group • Then, choose a spokesperson to share big ideas out to the large group

  11. Exit Reflection • Please complete the exit reflection • When you finish, please put it in your folder and file your folder in the crate. • Thank you for today; I know you are tired. I will review your exit reflections and begin addressing needs as soon as possible.
