You need a ruler & protractor for these!
When graphing intersecting lines, solve both equations for y (use parentheses when dividing). Plug into y1 = & y2 = in graphing calculator. Then ... Systems of equations #40 & 45matrices & graphing intersecting lines Now do #45 both ways in your lecture notes!
Wed, Sept 4 Don’t forget to copy today’s & every day's agenda! UNIT TEST Friday the 20th!!!!!
Vectors Lab 3) so, according to above, your answer should be pretty close to the opposite of vector C (in other words -C) 5) the equilibriant (purple ray) is equal and opposite to the resultant (blue ray); so equil(A+B)=C If the equilibriant is asked for, find the resultant and flip the direction! 6) only use the MAGNITUDES to do the % error 8) equil (B + C) = A; 9) B + C = -A 11) C + A = -B; equil(C + A) = B
Get a red pen, we’ll go over the quiz…. • After we correct it, how would you find the equilibriant of the problem? • Note: If you did not do well, you MUST come in for help! We are mostly done working on vectors in class, but they are 40% of the first unit test!
Lecture notes:Distance, Displacement, Speed & Velocity • Copy the figure below • A = 3 km East, B = 4 km North • Elephant walked A+B in 2 hours • The distance is the total path walked (a scalar) • What is this? • The displacement (a vector) is the straight difference between the start point and the end point “as the crow flies” • What is this?
Lecture notes:Distance, Displacement, Speed & Velocity • The elephant walked A+B in 2 hours • The speed is defined to be distance / time • What is this? • THIS IS A SCALAR • The velocity is defined to be the displacement / time • What is this? • THIS IS A VECTOR, so don't forget direction!!!! • These 4 questions about the elephant are question #2 on your first unit test, but with a more complicated vector problem than A+B in hor/vert directions!
Lecture notes:Distance, Displacement, Speed & Velocity • If speed = distance / time, let’s review some simple algebra… • What is distance = ? • What is time = ? • BE CAREFUL! CROSS-MULTIPLY!
Lecture notes:Distance, Displacement, Speed & Velocity • Question #1 on your first unit test asks for the definitions of distance vs displacement; and the formulas for speed & velocity • It also asks which are scalars & which are vectors • And is asks the following to make sure you get it … (see next slide)
A bumblebee flew 56 meters along a long, twisting path only to land on a flower 1.0 meter due east of the point from which it started. If the entire trip took 30 minutes, what was its distance, displacement, average speed and average velocity?
Let’s start #7 and #11 together • 7) Calculate the average speeds in km/yr of Mercury (and Earth, Saturn, and Pluto) in orbit around the sun. Use your astronomical data handout to obtain their "mean distance from the sun" (the radius of the assumed circular orbit) and their "period of revolution" (the time it takes them to go around once). • THINK CIRCUMFERENCE! • (a) At exactly 1:00PM a car traveling WEST at a constant speed of 24 km/hr is 11 km WEST of the school. Where will the car be at 3:30PM? (b) If instead the car was 11 km EAST of the school at 1:00PM, but still traveling WEST at a constant speed of 24 km/hr, where will the car be at 3:30PM? • DRAW A GOOD ANNOTATED PICTURE!
Thurs September 12 (Back to School Night – I wont be here) • Questions on HW?? (2 from this set are on the test) • Talk about tonight's HW – “average speed” & “average velocity” • “Human locomotion” minilab • Asst: speed & velocity problems 19-34 hints on website! DONATION letters? Get ready for a Binder Check! (If you didn’t last week, do a binder self-check quickly in the first column of the rubric! Do you have the agenda copied for every day so far?) UNIT TEST Fridaythe 20th!!!!!
Human Locomotion Minilab: Results & Conclusions:(has 4 parts: restate purpose, state results, error analysis, application of experiment) The purpose of this experiment was to prove that the fastest (non-mechanical) way to move a human body 10.0 meters is by crab-walking. Fri Sept 13 • Go over HW (3 from this set are on the test) • “The Optimal Average Speed of Collapse of a Domino Column” – get DATA • Asst: Speed/Velocity packet 35-52 skip 39 (continue to look on website and/or email me for help/hints) ** All will be collected tomorrow (Monday) DONATION letters - LAST DAY for HW credit (even if with a zero donation)! UNIT TEST Fridaythe 20th!!!!!
The Optimal Average Speed of Collapse of a Domino Column Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the optimal (best) separation between dominoes lined up in a column, so that a specific column length of dominoes will collapse the most quickly.
The Optimal … of a Domino … Day 2 Step 1) Do your graph of speed (list 2 on the y axis) vs separation (list 1 on the x axis). Sketch the graph on your lab paper. Use 2nd calc to find the maximum of the graph and write it on your paper too. Bring me your calculator with the max shown on the graph in the window. I will stamp it, and then you must erase your data & equation. Step 2) Write your R&C …. Results & Conclusions:(has 4 parts: restate purpose, state results, error analysis, application of experiment) The purpose of this experiment was to determine the optimal separation between dominoes lined up in a column, so that a specific column length of dominoes will collapse the most quickly. The experiment determined that the best domino separation would be ____ cm, which would fall with a speed of ____ m/s. Possible sources of error were …. An application of this experiment is …
Mon Sept 16 • Go over HW (2 from this set are on the test); turn in • Finish & turn in Human Locomotion lab if didn’t • Finish & turn in “Optimal Average Speed ... Acceptable speeds are listed. Check yours, and email me if you don’t have that!) • On the BACK, part B #5 should say 35 mm measured = 6.912 x 108 meters actual UNIT TEST Friday the 20th!!!!!

Do you have 17 schedules/agendas (and accompanying lecture notes when given)?
NOTE: • Physics test policy: If you are absent for more than 1 unit test, you will be given a full essay test as a make-up. • If you are absent for only the test period, our “reasonable time period” is an hour for an hour, so the test will have to be taken within an hour of the period you missed. If you are absent for the whole day, you must take it the next day after school, since it’s a day for a day. (See above about being absent for more than 1 test!) • Any school field trips or sporting events: the policy clearly states that the test must be taken BEFORE the absence.
IF WE DO NOT HAVE TIME TO GO OVER ALL OF THIS (Collaboration Day), IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY TO LOOK IT OVER AT HOME, AND EMAIL US TONIGHT IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!!!!!
