Identify the following components of the HAVERSIAN system of compact bone (Analzye the picture!)… • Repeating structural units • Concentric circles of extracellular matrix (like rings in a tree) • Vertical passageway for blood vessels • Horizontal passageway for blood vessels connecting from periosteum

  3. Notes: remember this system is found only in COMPACT bone. It is NOT found in spongy bone. • Repeating structural units- Osteon • Concentric circles of extracellular matrix (like rings in a tree)- Lamellae • Vertical passageway for blood vessels- Central canal (Haversian canal) • Horizontal passageway for blood vessels connecting from periosteum- Perforating (Volkmann’s) canal
