In July 2013, the Dworshak and Clearwater Hatcheries were well below average Spring Chinook salmon adult collections. At the same time, Steelhead catch and release anglers were reporting large numbers of Spring Chinook below the Dworshak Dam, but collections at the Dworshak trap were only 10-30 adults per day. Capturing Chinook Broodstock with Anglers -DworshakNational Fish Hatchery Rob Bohn (Rob_Bohn@fws.gov), Nate Wiese (nathan_wiese@fws.gov), Jeremy Sommer (jsommer@nezperce.org) DworshakNational Fish Hatchery, 276 Dworshak Complex Drive, Orofino, ID 83544 The effort yielded a total of 574 fish. 370 of these fish were adults utilized in the Dworshakbroodstock program. Of the 511 adults and jacks kept in the Dworshak holding ponds, only five mortalities (0.9%) were recovered in the two and a half weeks prior to spawning operations. In addition, 43 jacks were floy-tagged during this effort to estimate fish movement from the Dworshak Dam back to the Hatchery ladder. 44% of the floy-tagged jacks were recaptured at the trap, but none were re-caught by the anglers. The Nez Perce Tribe, Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), and Dworshak Hatchery partnered with local anglers to catch additional broodstock below the Dworshak Dam. 10 experienced anglers were recruited and fished with bobber and jig set-ups tipped with shrimp or eggs. Hooked Chinook were netted in knotless nets by IDFG and Dworshak staff and loaded onto a fish transport tanker onsiteusing a sleeve filled with enough water to cover the opercle plate. From net to truck was 3-4 minutes. With the Angler Effort, the Dworshak trap efficiency was increased from 73% in 2012 to 93% in 2013 from Lower Granite Dam. Anglers caught one steelhead during the entire effort. An average of 3 IDFG and Dworshak staff spent 74 hours each on this project. This effort was a tremendous outreach effort and partnership between the FWS, Corps of Engineers, NPT, IDFG, LSRCP, and the Orofino community. Thank You!
