  1. Summer of the Monkeys By: WILSON RAWLS Presentation BY Hunter

  2. The Unexpected Monkey One Jay Berry Lee is a fourteen year old that has an unexpected journey. He has a sister Daisy, and when they were very young, their family all moved to live in the land that Grandpa offered them. Everything was going great, when Jay has an unexpected encounter with the monkey that Rowdy treed. He thought that his eyes were playing tricks on him, but they weren’t. Jay then heard more monkeys off in the distance. Jay told his Papa but he didn’t believe that it was a wild monkey. He then told his Mama and she believed him but she didn’t want it to be true. She then sent him on a trip to Grandpa’s store to get supplies.

  3. TWo Grandpa's Story Jay goes to Grandpa’s store and tells him about the monkeys. Grandpa said that he already knew about the monkeys. He said that a circus train broke down and many monkeys escaped and they were offering a big reward for the return of them. They were offering 2 bucks per monkey except for one special one, which is worth 100 bucks in gold. Jay was very excited and he wanted to catch them so he can buy a pony and a .22 gun. Grandpa and him made traps to set up to catch the monkeys. It captures the monkeys foot but it doesn’t harm the monkey.

  4. The Old Man of the Mountain Three Jay Berry tells his parents about the monkeys and how he is going to try to catch them. His mom didn’t like the idea but his dad thought it would be good. Jay Berry went to talk to his sister and she said that their was an Old Man of the Mountain. She said that he was created by God to protect the hills and the mountains from danger and to bring bad luck to anyone that brought harm to the animals in the hills.

  5. Trying to Catch the Monkeys Four Jay Berry is a little cocky about catching all of the monkeys. He thinks that he is the best monkey catcher in the world and that he can catch all of them by sundown. Jay Berry goes out by the tree that he saw the monkey in and he placed traps around the tree. He then proceeded to put apples by the traps so that the monkeys would be attracted. The little monkeys were foolish and went to go meet the apples but the chimpanzee was a lot smarter and he told the little monkeys to back off and then the big monkey step over the traps and grabbed the apples and started laughing at Jay Berry! Jay Berry then was mad and he tried the trap again and thought that he did very well but he rather didn’t. The chimp laughed at him again after he grabbed the apples for a second time. Then Jay Berry put down his gunny sack and went off to get a drink of water and when he came back they were gone! The monkeys had taken them and were hiding in a tree. The chimpanzee threw apples at Jay but that just made him angry. Jay Berry picked up his bean shooter, loaded it, and took aim straight at the belly button of the monkey. Then Jay Berry did it a second time and that made them mad and they pretended to chase Jay Berry but he thought it was real so he ran back to his home like a little girl with Rowdy in the lead.

  6. Five Catching Dem Monkeys: Plan #2 Jay Berry runs back to his house and tells his Papa the story of how his clothes got all torn. Papa didn’t believe that monkeys are that smart and that they could talk to each other. His Father says that he probably needs to go talk to grandpa. Mama and Daisy wanted to know what happened and Jay Berry couldn’t lie so he told them everything. Then he got changed and went to go see grandpa. The plan was to dig a hole at night so that the monkeys wouldn’t see him and then he’d be there before they wake up waiting for them with a net.

  7. Six Gandy Jay Berry’s grandma is a pretty good doctor. She gives him an inspection, three times a year. She says that he is getting skinnier and skinnier every year. Gandy is a goose that has been in a lot of fights. Jay Berry hates the goose because he always wants to catch Jay when he isn’t looking. So to get Gandy back, Jay Berry caught him in the net and Gandy got caught in the net. Then Daisy screams and Mama comes in and they all get Gandy out. Gandy then honks and flies away and Daisy and Mama think that he isn’t coming back but Papa and Jay Berry know that he is coming back. Papa and Jay Berry went down in the bottoms after dinner and they dug a hole and they put dirt and brush on the top of it so that the monkeys couldn’t see it. They then went back home and got some sleep.

  8. The Fight Seven Jay Berry and Rowdy get up early and they go down to the bottoms to catch some monkeys. They climb into the hole and two animals almost get in and ruin everything. One snake almost came in and also a hornet almost came in. Then the big monkey came and told the little monkeys that it was okay to go and eat the apples but he was wrong. Jay Berry caught two monkeys in his net and started walking home with them. The big monkey didn’t like this at all. The chimpanzee tried to warn them but they wouldn’t release the monkeys. Then the big monkey had the little monkeys surround Jay Berry and Rowdy and they all put up a big fight. Little monkeys were everywhere. They clawed and whipped at them both and Jay wasn’t left without claw marks and bite marks. The monkeys in the net had escaped and all the monkeys went away. Jay Berry and Rowdy started for home fearing the consequences.

  9. Eight Red Cross Nursing Rowdy and Jay Berry had lots of bites and cuts from the fight with the monkeys. His sister, Daisy, had to take care of him for the next three days. She was a “Red Cross Nurse.” She took good care of Jay Berry but she thought he was going crazy when he refused to have any more water after the fifth glass. Daisy felt sorry for Rowdy so she brought Rowdy up from under the house and dragged him in Jay Berry’s room in a wheelbarrow. After one day of being treated by Daisy, Rowdy had had enough. He jumped out of the window and ran back under the house. After three days Jay Berry went to go meet grandpa to find out another plan. This plan was to become friends with the chimpanzee. His name was Jimbo. They got a note from the trainer and he said that the monkey was really smart.

  10. Nine Tricky Old Jimbo Rowdy and Jay Berry go down into the bottoms with some apples to see if they can make friends with Jimbo. They found a whiskey mash and all the monkeys were there, drunk! Jay Berry gave Jimbo an apple and because of that Jimbo offered Jay Berry and Rowdy some sour mash. Jimbo kept on filling it up so that they would trick him. Jay Berry falls asleep and when he wakes up he is cold. His Britches are missing and Jay Berry thinks that the monkeys got them drunk so they can trick him and take his britches. Jay Berry and Rowdy walk home, not in a straight line but enough to get home. When they get home Daisy smells something bad, and she finds out that Jay Berry and Rowdy are drunk! Mama puts Jay Berry right to bed and when he wakes up, he hears Mama and Papa talking about what happened and Papa thinks that everything Jay Berry said was true.

  11. Ten The Library Papa and Mama went down to the store to get supplies in the morning, but Daisy stayed home to help Jay Berry. They talked and Jay Berry said he could drink more than a gallon of water at that time because of the after affect of him becoming drunk. After a couple of days, Jay Berry walked out into the living room and everyone was happy that he was better. Mama was going to make a new pair of Britches for Jay Berry. Jay Berry and Rowdy went to Grandpa’s shop and he wasn’t there. He was down at the barn working and then Jay Berry had another talk with Grandpa. Grandpa said that in the morning, he would come down and take Jay Berry to the library in the town to find out ways to catching monkeys. Rowdy got a meat rind and Jay Berry got a bag of candy.

  12. ELEVEN TOWN Jay Berry woke up late, when Papa woke him up. Grandpa was drinking coffee and everyone was awake. Grandpa got the ride ready and they started off towards the town. Rowdy wanted to go so they let him come along. On the way there they see some coons and Rowdy goes to try to hunt them but they beat him up leaving marks all over his face. When they get to the town they feed and water Rowdy and the team and they go order a room at the hotel. Then they go around and look through all of the stores and shops in the town and when Jay Berry gets home, he is exhausted and he instantly falls asleep. Jay Berry wakes up the next morning and Grandpa isn’t there. He goes downstairs and finds a women, and she says that his grandfather is out by the barn and that he was to go meet with him after breakfast. When Jay gets done with breakfast, he goes and meets with his grandpa and they go to the library. When they went to the library they had the librarian find a book on catching monkeys. When they were reading through it Rowdy started crying on the front door and Jay Berry went and got him and tied him up. Grandpa said that he found the solution.

  13. Twelve Getting Coconuts Jay Berry and Grandpa are going to use coconuts to attract the monkeys into a pen to capture them. Coconuts are one of monkeys favorite fruit besides bananas. Jay Berry goes with grandpa to a store that has a lot of items. They buy a half a bushel of coconuts and Jay Berry buys items for his family. Daisy got ribbons, Papa got a new mug, and Mama got a thimble. The girl that Jay Berry bought the items from thought Jay Berry was cute. She kept trying to get Jay Berry to hold her hand. Jay Berry thought she was weird and he left the store with a temper. When they were almost home, Jay Berry and Grandpa got a little thirsty. They went to Jay Berry’s Spring and starting drinking from the water. When they were gone, the monkeys crept into their sack of coconuts and took them and replaced it with Jay Berry’s gunny sack and britches. They also took the ribbons and spread them through the forest on the top of the trees. When they got home everyone was laughing except for Daisy.

  14. Thirteen Thor Jay Berry wakes up with a jerk and there is a big storm going on outside. Daisy tells a story about how Thor is the god of thunder and lightning and how when he is angry he picks up his hammer and throws it across the galaxies and that is why there are lightning bolts. Daisy didn’t like thunder storms because they made her legs hurt really bad. After the storm died down a little, Daisy said that she was going to go to bed. She also said that she saw the OMOTM standing outside giving us good luck by smiling and pointing his stick at our house. When Jay Berry fell asleep he had a dream that he was lost in the mountains with Rowdy and that when they woke up in the dream, the OMOTM was standing there in front of them. Jay Berry said that he was a good boy and that he needed his help to get out of the mountains. The Old Man of the Mountains pointed to the right way to go. Then Jay Berry woke up from the dream when his sister, Daisy, was pounding on his door to wake up. When Jay Berry woke up he thought everything outside would be grim and gloomy but there was sunshine and no dark clouds. When they all went to go to the breakfast table, they asked each other what they were going to go do that day. Daisy said that she was going to go clean her playhouse from the storm the night before. Jay Berry said he was going to go down in the bottoms and see if the monkeys were all right. Mama didn’t like the idea because it was all wet so she said that he had to go later in the day so the sun could dry the place up a little. Papa asked if Jay Berry wanted to go to his shop to help out and he said he would love to.

  15. Fourteen Fairy Ring Jay Berry was working in Papa’s shop when all of a sudden Daisy screams. Jay Berry and Papa thought there was going to be a snake in Daisy’s playhouse. It wasn’t a snake, it was a fairy ring. A fairy ring is a ring of mushrooms that supposedly if you step in it and say a wish, it will come true. They all said a wish, even Rowdy. There was a story of a women and her groom that were supposed to get married but he was called to war and then he went missing. She was so upset that she never spoke to anyone until one day she found a fairy ring and she said a wish that Johnnie would return and they would get married. Soon enough, three days later, the man came to her house and they were married. Jay Berry asked Papa if you could do something to help make a wish come true. He said that you have to have hard faith and believe and that would help it come true. Jay Berry wished that Daisy’s leg would get better.

  16. MONKEYS! Fifteen Jay Berry and Rowdy went into the bottoms to see if the monkeys were alright. They were walking for a long time calling the monkeys name but he wasn’t responding. They were just about to give up when Jay Berry hears a sound of a whimpering animal. They walk to the sound of the noise and the noise is Jimbo. He was badly hurt from the storm and all the monkeys were all wet. They seemed to want have been caught! So, Jay Berry picked up Jimbo and all of the monkeys followed Jay Berry to his home. Daisy called Mama and Papa came out of his shop and everyone was surprised. Mama was scared that Jimbo would hurt them but he was perfectly harmless. They put the monkeys in the corn crib and Rowdy laid in there with them. Jay Berry started heading to Grandpas to tell him the great news.

  17. Sixteen Jay Berry and Rowdy run the fastest they have ever ran to grandpa’s store. They tell grandpa the great news about them catching all of the monkeys with the help of the storm and he is really happy. He says that he will send a telegram to the people that own the circus and that he will go trade with this one Cherokee Indian to see if he has any ponies available for purchasing. Grandpa lets Jay Berry help himself to the candy and that made Jay Berry very happy. Rowdy had his wish come true when Grandpa gave him a very big bone. Jay Berry goes home and they eat dinner and have a bible reading. When Jay Berry goes to bed, he didn’t have a very good nights sleep. Jay kept on having good and bad dreams. When Jay Berry wakes up, they start eating dinner and Rowdy comes into the house barking that there was a person coming to the house. The person was the circus people coming to collect the monkeys. They put all the monkeys in their truck and they give Jay Berry the money. Jay Berry gave six dollars to his sister, Daisy, and he started to go to grandpa’s store. PAYDAY

  18. SEVENTEEN: THE PONY When Jay Berry arrived at Grandpa’s store, there was two ponies, a painted one and a muscular one. The muscular one was built for power and the painted one was built for speed. Jay Berry picked the painted pony. Then when he was going to buy the painted pony, he saw that her leg had a big gash in it because it had been torn by a fence. Jay Berry had a talk with his grandpa and his grandfather said that he would be as good as new in four to five weeks. Grandpa said that he always felt sorry for the things that are crippled. Grandpa was trying to get Jay Berry to use his money to help get surgery for Daisy. Jay Berry felt stupid and he told Grandpa that he wasn’t going to buy the pony. Jay Berry told his family and Grandpa that he was going to pay for Daisy’s surgery and they started packing. Jay Berry’s father was so proud of Jay Berry and he shook his hand for the first time in his life.

  19. Eighteen:Train Jay Berry watched Mama and Daisy go off to the doctors to get her leg repaired. The house wasn’t very loud without Daisy and Mama. They didn’t have that many good meals because Mama did most of the cooking and Jay Berry and Father didn’t have enough experience with cooking. Jay Berry began to get really bored and him and his Father didn’t talk that much. After a couple of weeks had past, they got a letter from Mama saying that the surgery is done and that Daisy is now in a cast. Then another couple of weeks had past and Grandpa gave them a letter from Mama saying that Daisy’s surgery was successful and that they wanted Father and Jay Berry to be at the train when they get off. Jay Berry and Rowdy haven’t seen a train before so they were really scared when the train went by. Jay Berry thought that Rowdy would run straight into the train. Then the train stopped and people began to get out of it. Mama and Daisy came out and they were both really happy, and Jay Berry didn’t know which leg was the crippled leg on Daisy. Daisy was so happy that she went up to Jay Berry and kissed him right on the mouth. Jay Berry blushed and he heard Rowdy howling to let everyone know that he is happy. Mama said that she was going to keep Daisy’s old crutch and hang it up on the wall so she could see it everyday and be thankful.

  20. 19: Wishes Come True They all saw Grandpa driving up to the house to see Daisy and to Jay Berry’s surprise, there was the little mare in the middle of the lot with him. Grandpa said that that pony was all his. Jay Berry was very happy and Daisy said that her wish came true, that Jay Berry would get his .22 and his pony. She had a .22 in her hand and she made Jay Berry promise he wouldn’t ever hurt the little animals and that he can only hurt the mean animals. Jay Berry and Mama and Papa said that their wishes came true also, that Daisy’s crippled leg would have surgery and be a success. When Jay Berry was sixteen, he had had many experiences and he travels a lot. He goes all over the country to learn more and to hunt.
