What is Makaton • MAKATON IS A UNIQUE LANGUAGE PROGRAMME WHICH USES SIGNS, SYMBOLS AND SPEECH TO ENABLE PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS.
how does Makaton differ from British sign language? • Makaton is designed to be used to support spoken language, for people with learning or communication difficulties. Whereas, British Sign Language is a language with its own structure and grammar and uses hand signs, body language, facial expression and lip patterns

Advantages and disadvantages • Supports the development of spoken language • The signs used remain the same irrespective of the language spoken, this is useful where English not the first language. • Not everyone can understand Makaton • Hard to teach • Makaton requires the communication partner to be able to understand the signs
