  1. School is over, summer’s hereBut learning never ends! Good Shepherd Lutheran Early Childhood Center Week One of Summer Fun 2014 Bible Story: Philip and the Ethiopian Theme: Chariots, Wheels, and Vehicles

  2. After Gathering Time, we go outside from 9 – 10:45 a.m. We play and learn, get exercise and fresh air, and enjoy God’s creation. Water Play promotes conversation and scientific discoveries about the properties of water and whether items will sink or float. In our Bible story, the Ethiopian was baptized. The shells remind us of our Baptism. These girls were pretending to baptize by saying “in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Fun with Fish

  3. Art and PuppetsWe painted with cars and painted with orange soap paint. Puppet shows drew audiences of teachers and friends.

  4. Time for snackWe made wheels by cutting bananas. Yum! Those water bottles help us stay hydrated. Other snacks during the week included yogurt, popcorn, stop lights(vanilla wafers with red, green and yellow frosting). Cutting bananas is good exercise for those writing and drawing muscles and helps with hand/eye coordination.

  5. Writing practiceSome students were writing names and words, others used pretend writing to take orders for the restaurant. Teachers were favorite customers.

  6. Art is more fun outside!Drawing on cardboard is better than paper which might blow away. Plus we get to share and collaborate as we draw together on the same piece.

  7. Tools and buildingStudents enjoyed pretending to repair the play equipment. Blocks can come outside, too. Time to build a castle. Saw, pound, drill, sand – we’re increasing our vocabulary. We are pirates!

  8. Let’s get some exerciseJump rope, swing, climb, run, kick, ride, or even ride a “horse.”

  9. Nature ExplorationThere’s no better way to learn about God’s world than to explore the outdoors. Picking flowers for Mom. Bugs get put into a viewing jar. Let’s have a pet ant! These girls aren’t afraid of letting one crawl on them. EG: “Ants are God’s creatures. I love them and they love me.”

  10. More science discoveries We watched ants busy building their “condos” and a mother robin sitting on her nest. Digging in the dirt yields worms and fun! Physics: which cylinder or vehicle will roll fastest down the ramp?

  11. We learned inside, too. Story time promotes letter and language learning. Books we read Hot Hippo My Truck is Stuck Wheels God Makes Me His Child in Baptism This Little Light of Mine Toad on the Road Who Drives This? Animals in Summer Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons Songs we sang: The Ethiopian was Rejoicing Happy all the Time Mighty God Down by the Bay Trucks Chariot Wheels have spokes. This is a Math activity matching numbers to the spoke with the same number. We also have daily counting activities.
