  2. History and Politics • First wind turbine was a battery charger 1887. • Windmills have • existed for thousands • of years

  3. The Physics Behind Wind Power • The force of wind turns the turbine, turbine turns the generator and then the energy is stored.

  4. Pros to Wind Power • Wind is generated naturally. • Wind will never cease to exist. • Virtually no pollution. • Requires less resources than other sources of energy.

  5. Cons to Wind Power • Wind is not always available. • Turbines kill birds. • Repairs and maintenance. • Requires land. • Changes wind patterns. • Transportation of building materials.

  6. Solutions to Shortcomings • Sensors on turbines. • Higher quality turbines. • Build thinner more durable turbines to take less land and lower repairs. • Arrowdynamic to lessen disruption on wind patterns.

  7. Global Production of Wind Power • Production- 65 Trillion kWh

  8. U.S. Production of Wind Power • 16 Trillion kWh

  9. California Production of Wind Power • 11million kWh estimated in 2010

  10. Wind Power Facts • Wind turbines spin on average • 35 mph - 55 mph. • Wind turbines are on average 30%-40% efficient. • each turbine can power 335 households.

  11. How Wind Affects the Environment • Kills Birds. -140,000 a year • Uses masses of land. • Metal and plastic for structure. • Located in desert or coastal ranges so little effect on ground wildlife.
