Standards vs. Curriculum • A standard defines what a student must know and be able to do in order to demonstrate mastery in a specific content area. • All grade levels and subject areas have a defined set of standards, established by NC. • Students and teachers are held accountable for ensuring that the defined standards are met throughout the course of a school year or semester. • A curriculum is the roadmap teachers use to ensure that all standards are taught and assessed within pre-determined time frames.
Importance of Standards for Parents Academic standards are important because they • prepare students for college, career, and citizenship; • set clear and consistent expectations; • build knowledge and skills; • help set high goals for students and teachers; • provide opportunities for students to engage in challenging work; • support more effective teaching in the classroom; • promote active parent involvement!
