Google Searches websites, blogs, even researchers’ home pages, but does not focus on scholarly information sources Google Scholar Searches for information from academic sources
Sample Search Google • 108,000 results • Wikipedia, online versions of text, professors’ notes, study notes/guides, student journal, etc Google Scholar • 2410 results • Books • Journal articles BehnOronooko
Results may include Journal articles Books Conference papers Presentations Student papers
Google Scholar results are from scholarly sites, but may not all qualify as peer-reviewed sources – you must evaluate results to make sure they are appropriate. Be Aware!
Evaluating Sources Check whether content is research or opinion, look for format (introduction, methodology, results, etc.), proper citation of sources, bibliography/reference list, and so on. Check on source (Journal name, etc.) If uncertain, double-check with your professor

How to use Google Scholar Use the Google search box on the Library home page; this will identify you as a StFX user.
Will be prompted to log in • Must use Scholar Preferences to show links to StFX Off-campus users
You can also use Scholar Preferences to show links to import citations into
Advanced Search Search for articles by an author Search for articles in a particular journal Limit your search by date
