4. An example from Ohio Dayton Regional STEM School
Now in 3rd year of operation
Statements in video will be true of Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee EXCEPT:
Dayton School offers Chinese courses. At this time, foreign language offerings at IA are through the base schools.
Dayton School pulls from many school districts. At this time, IA is open only to students from Sullivan County and Kingsport City school systems.

5. Now a few details… School to open August 6, 2012 at former Brookside Elementary School building in Bloomingdale
Initially 6th & 7th grade, ~80 students per grade
Eventually 6th through 12th grade
Split between Kingsport City and Sullivan County students
Open to any student expressing interest
Slots filled by random drawing if oversubscribed

Snow schedule matches Kingsport City schools
Students participate in class activities remotely if they cannot travel to school.

Innovation Academy teachers have individual and team planning periods in afternoon
8. Curriculum Elements Project-based learning and integration of STEM material across disciplines, including Language Arts and Humanities
Rigor, high expectations of students
Involvement of STEM professionals & community partners
Heavy use of digital technologies and communication tools
Student iPad and email to access course materials & digital books, download assignments, present project findings
Apple TV and videoconferencing in classrooms for remote guest lecturers, snow days
9. Curriculum Elements Outdoor and service learning
Exposure to STEM careers and opportunities to job-shadow in local hospitals, industries
Dual enrollment, on-line learning courses, and Advanced Placement
Opportunities to take foreign languages
School equipped with science labs and collaborative, flexible workspaces
Advanced Math program
10. Example Projects Evaluate water quality and microbial growth of local stream
Design a robot to perform a common task
Evaluate alternate energy sources
Analyze the lower atmosphere using a weather balloon
Build a catapult or rocket launcher to study the path of projectiles
11. Related Arts & Sports Students return to base schools each day for related arts and to participate in sports & after school activities
Students are eligible to participate in sports, after-school activities, and social events as if they were full-time attendees at base school
Details are being developed with principals of base schools and will be posted on website as information becomes available
Priority is being placed on offering a broad orchestra, band, & chorus program, but not every aspect will be offered at every base school

13. Transportation Transportation to Innovation Academy in the morning by parent or by bus from selected drop points
Bus transportation will be provided for all students from Innovation Academy to base schools for afternoon Related Arts

14. Application Process School is open to any student in Kingsport City or Sullivan County school systems
No admission criteria
Applications must be received by 5pm June 1
