Welcome to Family Studies 7 Class Expectations It is your responsibility to keep your binder up to date If you are absent from a class, you should borrow notes from another student (Check the website) You should also come see me to get any missing assignments and handouts you may have missed • You are expected to be on time and prepared for class • You should have a family studies binder or section, ready with looseleaf and a pencil • Any handouts, journals, assignments, notes will go into this section

  5. Family Studies 7- 3 Units This course is divided into 3 units. Depending on time available, we will be going through each of the following modules (order and detail to be determined) Module 1: Textiles Art and Design- Students will be able to understand the impact of textile art and design on our daily lives. • develop an understanding of clothing choice and personal expression • Personal expression in clothing • Careers in the textile field Module 2 – The Clothing Consumer - Students will be expected to use their knowledge of textiles to become more informed consumers. • clothing care and selection • types of fabrics and fibres and how to care for each Module 3 – Textile Production Basics - Students will be expected to develop competency in the selection and use of technological applications in textiles. • Basic sewing skills “earning the sewing license” • Sewing projects (to be discussed and determined) • Sewing terminology

Assessment and Evaluation • You will be assessed based on a 4 letter grade scheme: A,B,C,D • You will be evaluated using many different methods throughout the term including: Journals, Assignments, Quizzes, Sewing “License”, 1-2 Major Sewing Projects and others • You will be assigned grades based on the 1-4 system of achievement of outcomes 4: Meets all or exceeds the curriculum outcomes 3: Meets most of the curriculum outcomes 2: Meets some of the curriculum outcomes 1: Meets few of the curriculum outcomes

  9. Clothing and Fashion • What is the new/current trend in clothing? • What is Fashion? • What is the point of wearing clothing?

  10. Take out a sheet of looseleaf. Write down your first impression based on the way the person in dressed in each slide.

  11. First Impressions • How long does it take to make a first impression? • What types of impressions can we give using our clothes? • What do you think your clothing says about you? • How do you think other people see your clothing?

Why We Wear Clothes • There are 5 main reasons people wear clothes: • Protection: clothing provides physical safeguards to the body, preventing harm from climate and environment • Modesty: Covering the body according to the code of decency established by society • Adornment: added decoration or ornamentation • Identification: Establishing who someone is or what they do • Status: One’s position or rank in comparison to others

Why We Wear Clothing Assignment 1) Worksheet (handout) • Answer the questions on the first page and match each definition from the list and give and example • On the back, draw a picture or find an example of each reason why we wear clothing 2) T-Shirt Design (Handout) • Create a t-shirt design that best describes and shows your own personal style; use color, pattern, designs, logos etc to show who you are as a person and what your style is
