One-Step Equations When solving an equation, your goal is to isolate the variable. To do this: Steps: • Get rid of the number that is on the same side of the equal sign as the variable by doing the opposite operation. • Do the opposite operation to both sides.
Addition & Subtraction Examples n + 9 = 27 5 + x = 14 y – 16 = 27 37 = m + 14 28 = r – 11
Multiplication & Division Examples 4x = 20 45 = 3h = w 5 y = 2 4
Two-Step Equations When solving an equation, your goal is to isolate the variable. To do this: Steps: • Get rid of the constant that is being added or subtracted from the variable by doing the opposite operation to both sides (addition or subtraction). 2. Get rid of the number that is being multiplied or divided from the variable by doing the opposite operation to both sides (division or multiplication).
Examples 3x + 4 = 22 28 = 9x – 8 a – 5 = 10 4 19 = c + 16 20
Special Two-Step Equation *When you have an equation that has a fraction with more than one numerator (fat fraction) follow these steps: • Multiply both sides of the equation by the denominator. • Add or subtract the remaining constant (do opposite operation to both sides).
Examples X – 8 = 2 3 10 = a + 4 3
Three-Step Equations Steps: • Simplify the equation before solving: • distributive property • combining like terms • Now solve the remaining two-step equation.
Examples 9x – 3 – 5x = 9 5 ( x + 7 ) = 90
Variables on both sides Steps: • Move variables to one side of the equation. • Move numbers to the other side of the equation. • Solve the equation.
Example 4x – 1 = 2x + 7
