About the Pipe Organ • An Æolian-Skinner organ, the biggest in Hawai‘i and one of the 50 largest in the world. • Installed at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in 1961, it is the Cathedral’s fourth pipe organ. • The pipe organ is essential to… • Cathedral worship services • Concerts by community and visiting artists and music groups • Up to 20 weddings each week

  6. Features of the Organ • A four-manual Æolian Skinner organ • Main organ has 4,526 pipes, all custom-made • Special features include: • a half-length 32' Contra Fagotto • a high-pressure Trompette Harmonique • a remote Antiphonal organ in the gallery near the west doors • 120 voices, 148 ranks

  16. The Pipe Organ in Peril • Age: it’s nearly 60 years old. Leather and other materials are subject to natural decay in this climate • Environmental assaults include a leaking roof that has destroyed one entire set of pipes, and termites have caused extensive damage to the console and other components • Over 166 notes are permanently silent • Electrical problems cause some notes to play on their own!

  20. Restoration Plan • On-site analysis by Schoenstein & Co, oldest and largest organ factory in the US completed in 2014. • Planned remedial actions include: • Re-voicing the pipes • Replacing the console • In 2018 we plan to invite three organ repair specialists to provide estimates.

  26. Costs and Benefits • Estimated total cost of the restoration project is $1M • The project will take about one year to complete • Value of the restored organ estimated to be nearly $2.5M
