Hyperpolarization • An increase in the electrical gradient across the membrane • Overshooting the equilibrium for resting potential of the potassium • Stimuli that open potassium channels hyperpolarized neurons
Depolarization • Reduction in the magnitude of the membrane potential • Stimuli that opens sodium channels depolarize the neuron
Action Potential • A stimulus strong enough to produce a depolarization that reaches the threshold triggers a different type of response • Nerve impulse that is non-graded (mag. is independent of the strength of the stimulus) • Plasma membrane of excitable cells have voltage gated channels -Ion channels with gates that open and close with membrane potential changes
Saltatory Conduction • Action potential jumps down the axon from node to node • Increases speed of transmission of nerve pulses
