Job 1

1. Job 1 • 1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that fearedGod, and eschewedevil. • 2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. • 3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east. • 4And his sons went and feastedin their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their threesisters to eat and to drink with them. • 5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Jobsent and sanctifiedthem, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Jobcontinually. • 6Now there was a daywhen the sonsof God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satancame also among them. • 7And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walkingup and down in it. • 8And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servantJob, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fearethGod, and escheweth evil? • 9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth JobfearGodfor nought? • 10Hast notthou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. • 11But put forth thine hand now, and touchall that he hath, and he will cursethee to thy face. • 12And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. • 13And there was a daywhen his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: • 14And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxenwere plowing, and the asses feedingbeside them: • 15And the Sabeansfellupon them, and took them away; yea, they have slainthe servantswith the edge of the sword; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee.

2. Job 1 • 16While he was yet speaking, there came alsoanother, and said, The fireof Godis fallen from heaven, and hath burnedup the sheep, and the servants, and consumedthem; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. • 17While he was yet speaking, there came alsoanother, and said, The Chaldeansmade outthree bands, and fellupon the camels, and have carriedthem away, yea, and slainthe servantswith the edge of the sword; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. • 18While he was yet speaking, there came alsoanother, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eatingand drinking winein their eldest brother's house: • 19And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smotethe four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escapedalone to tell thee. • 20Then Jobarose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and felldown upon the ground, and worshipped, • 21And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. • 22In all this Job sinned not, norchargedGodfoolishly.

3. Job 2 • 1Again there was a daywhen the sonsof God came to presentthemselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to presenthimself before the LORD. • 2And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walkingup and down in it. • 3And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servantJob, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fearethGod, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. • 4And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. • 5But put forth thine hand now, and touchhis boneand his flesh, and he will cursethee to thy face. • 6And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. • 7So went Satanforth from the presenceof the LORD, and smoteJobwith sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. • 8And he took him a potsherd to scrapehimself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. • 9Then said his wifeunto him, Dost thou still retainthine integrity? curse God, and die. • 10But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolishwomen speaketh. What? shall we receive goodat the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did notJobsinwith his lips. • 11Now when Job'sthree friends heard of all this evilthat was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. • 12And when they lifted uptheir eyesafar off, and knewhim not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their headstowardheaven. • 13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his griefwas very great.

4. Job 3 • 1After this openedJobhis mouth, and cursed his day. • 2And Job spake, and said, • 3Let the day perishwherein I was born, and the nightin which it was said, There is a man child conceived. • 4Let that day be darkness; let notGodregardit from above, neitherlet the light shineupon it. • 5Let darknessand the shadow of death stainit; let a cloud dwellupon it; let the blacknessof the day terrifyit. • 6As for that night, let darkness seizeupon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it notcome into the number of the months. • 7Lo, let that nightbe solitary, let no joyful voicecome therein. • 8Let them curseit that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning. • 9Let the starsof the twilightthereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neitherlet it see the dawning of the day: • 10Because it shut not upthe doorsof my mother's womb, nor hid sorrowfrom mine eyes. • 11Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghostwhen I came out of the belly? • 12Why did the knees preventme? or why the breaststhat I should suck? • 13For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, • 14With kingsand counsellorsof the earth, which builddesolateplacesfor themselves; • 15Or with princesthat had gold, who filledtheir houses with silver: • 16Or as an hidden untimely birthI had notbeen; as infantswhich never saw light. • 17There the wicked ceasefrom troubling; and there the wearybe at rest. • 18There the prisoners rest together; they hear notthe voiceof the oppressor. • 19The small and greatare there; and the servantis freefrom his master. • 20Wherefore is lightgiven to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; • 21Which long for death, but it cometh not; and digfor it more than for hid treasures; 22Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? 23Why is lightgiven to a man whose way is hid, and whom Godhath hedged in? 24For my sighingcometh before I eat, and my roaringsare poured out like the waters. 25For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.26I was notin safety, neitherhad I rest, neither was I quiet; yet troublecame.

5. Job 4 • 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, • 2If we assayto communewith thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking? • 3Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weakhands. • 4Thy wordshave upholdenhim that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees. • 5But nowit is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheththee, and thou art troubled. • 6Is notthis thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightnessof thy ways? • 7Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off? • 8Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. • 9By the blastof Godthey perish, and by the breathof his nostrilsare they consumed. • 10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. • 11The old lion perishethfor lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelpsare scattered abroad. • 12Now a thing was secretlybrought to me, and mine ear received a littlethereof. • 13In thoughtsfrom the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, • 14Fearcame upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. • 15Then a spirit passedbefore my face; the hairof my flesh stood up: • 16It stood still, but I could not discernthe formthereof: an imagewas before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, • 17Shall mortalman be more just than God? shall a man be more purethan his maker? • 18Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly: • 19How much lessin them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundationis in the dust, which are crushedbefore the moth? • 20They are destroyedfrom morning to evening: they perishfor ever without anyregarding it. • 21Doth nottheir excellencywhich is in them go away? they die, even withoutwisdom.

6. Job 5 • 1Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saintswilt thou turn? • 2For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. • 3I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursedhis habitation. • 4His children are far from safety, and they are crushedin the gate, neither is there any to deliverthem. • 5Whose harvestthe hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. • 6Although afflictioncometh notforth of the dust, neitherdoth trouble springout of the ground; • 7Yet manisborn unto trouble, as the sparks flyupward. • 8I would seekunto God, and unto Godwould I commitmy cause: • 9Which doeth greatthings and unsearchable; marvellous things without number: • 10Who giveth rainupon the earth, and sendeth watersupon the fields: • 11To set up on highthose that be low; that those which mournmay be exalted to safety. • 12He disappointeththe devicesof the crafty, so that their handscannotperformtheir enterprise. • 13He taketh the wisein their own craftiness: and the counselof the frowardis carried headlong. • 14They meetwith darknessin the day time, and gropein the noonday as in the night. • 15But he saveththe poorfrom the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. • 16So the poorhath hope, and iniquity stoppethher mouth. • 17Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise notthou the chasteningof the Almighty: • 18For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. • 19He shall deliverthee in six troubles: yea, in seventhere shall no evil touchthee. • 20In faminehe shall redeemthee from death: and in warfrom the powerof the sword. • 21Thou shalt be hidfrom the scourgeof the tongue: neithershalt thou be afraidof destructionwhen it cometh. 22At destructionand faminethou shalt laugh: neithershalt thou be afraidof the beastsof the earth. 23For thou shalt be in leaguewith the stonesof the field: and the beastsof the fieldshall be at peacewith thee. 24And thou shalt knowthat thy tabernacleshall be in peace; and thou shalt visitthy habitation, and shalt not sin. 25Thou shalt knowalso that thy seedshall be great, and thine offspringas the grassof the earth. 26Thou shalt come to thy gravein a full age, like as a shock of corncometh in in his season. 27Lo this, we have searchedit, so it is; hear it, and knowthou it for thy good.

7. Job 6 • 1But Jobanswered and said, • 2Oh that my griefwere throughlyweighed, and my calamity laidin the balances together! • 3For now it would be heavierthan the sand of the sea: therefore my wordsare swallowed up. • 4For the arrowsof the Almightyare within me, the poisonwhereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrorsof Goddo set themselves in array against me. • 5Doth the wild ass braywhen he hath grass? or loweththe oxover his fodder? • 6Can that which is unsavourybe eaten without salt? or is there any tastein the white of an egg? • 7The things that my soul refused to touchare as my sorrowful meat. • 8Oh that I might have my request; and that Godwould grantme the thing that I longfor! • 9Even that it would pleaseGodto destroyme; that he would let loosehis hand, and cutme off! • 10Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would hardenmyself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the wordsof the Holy One. • 11What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolongmy life? • 12Is my strengththe strength of stones? or is my fleshof brass? • 13Is notmy helpin me? and is wisdom driven quitefrom me? • 14To him that is afflicted pityshould be shewed from his friend; but he forsakeththe fearof the Almighty. • 15My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the streamof brooks they pass away; • 16Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snowis hid: • 17What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumedout of their place. • 18The pathsof their wayare turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish. • 19The troopsof Temalooked, the companiesof Shebawaitedfor them. • 20They were confoundedbecause they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed. 21For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid. 22Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a rewardfor me of your substance? 23Or, Deliverme from the enemy's hand? or, Redeemme from the hand of the mighty? 24Teachme, and I will holdmy tongue: and cause me to understandwherein I have erred. 25How forcibleare right words! but what doth your arguing reprove? 26Do ye imagineto reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind? 27Yea, ye overwhelmthe fatherless, and ye dig a pitfor your friend. 28Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evidentunto you if I lie. 29Return, I pray you, let it notbe iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousnessis in it. 30Is there iniquityin my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?

8. Job 7 • 1Is there notan appointed timeto man upon earth? are nothis daysalso like the days of an hireling? • 2As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hirelinglooketh for the rewardof his work: • 3So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nightsare appointedto me. • 4When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the nightbe gone? and I am full of tossingsto and fro unto the dawning of the day. • 5My fleshis clothedwith wormsand clods of dust; my skinis broken, and become loathsome. • 6My daysare swifterthan a weaver's shuttle, and are spentwithouthope. • 7O rememberthat my lifeis wind: mine eyeshall no more see good. • 8The eyeof him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. • 9As the cloudis consumedand vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the graveshall come upno more. • 10He shall return no more to his house, neithershall his place knowhim any more. • 11Therefore I will not refrainmy mouth; I will speakin the anguishof my spirit; I will complainin the bitternessof my soul. • 12Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me? • 13When I say, My bedshall comfortme, my couchshall easemy complaints; • 14Then thou scarestme with dreams, and terrifiestme through visions: • 15So that my soul chooseth strangling, and deathrather than my life. • 16I loatheit; I would not live alway: let me alone; for my daysare vanity. • 17What is man, that thou shouldest magnifyhim? and that thou shouldest setthine heartupon him? • 18And that thou shouldest visithim every morning, and tryhim every moment? • 19How longwilt thou not departfrom me, norlet me alonetill I swallow down my spittle? • 20I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou setme as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself? • 21And why dost thou not pardonmy transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seekme in the morning, but I shall not be.

9. Job 8 • 1Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, • 2How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the wordsof thy mouthbe like a strong wind? • 3Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice? • 4If thy children have sinned against him, and he have castthem away for their transgression; • 5If thou wouldest seekunto Godbetimes, and make thy supplicationto the Almighty; • 6If thou wert pureand upright; surely now he would awakefor thee, and make the habitationof thy righteousness prosperous. • 7Though thy beginningwas small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. • 8For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and preparethyself to the searchof their fathers: • 9(For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our daysupon earthare a shadow:) • 10Shall notthey teachthee, and tellthee, and utter wordsout of their heart? • 11Can the rush grow upwithoutmire? can the flag grow withoutwater? • 12Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it witherethbefore any other herb. • 13So are the pathsof all that forgetGod; and the hypocrite's hopeshall perish: • 14Whose hopeshall be cut off, and whose trustshall be a spider's web. • 15He shall leanupon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. • 16He is greenbefore the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden. • 17His rootsare wrappedabout the heap, and seeth the placeof stones. • 18If he destroyhim from his place, then it shall denyhim, saying, I have not seen thee. • 19Behold, this is the joyof his way, and out of the earthshall others grow. • 20Behold, Godwill not cast away a perfectman, neitherwill he help the evil doers: • 21Till he fillthy mouthwith laughing, and thy lipswithrejoicing. • 22They that hatethee shall be clothedwith shame; and the dwelling placeof the wickedshall come to nought.

Job 9 • 1Then Job answered and said, • 2I knowit is so of a truth: but how should man be justwith God? • 3If he will contendwith him, he cannotanswer him one of a thousand. • 4He is wisein heart, and mightyin strength: who hath hardenedhimself against him, and hath prospered? • 5Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneththem in his anger. • 6Which shaketh the earthout of her place, and the pillarsthereof tremble. • 7Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth upthe stars. • 8Which alonespreadeth outthe heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. • 9Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. • 10Which doeth greatthings past finding out; yea, and wonders without number. • 11Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceivehim not. • 12Behold, he taketh away, who can hinderhim? who will say unto him, What doest thou? • 13If Godwill not withdrawhis anger, the proud helpersdo stoopunder him. • 14How much lessshall I answer him, and chooseout my wordsto reasonwith him? • 15Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplicationto my judge. • 16If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believethat he had hearkenedunto my voice. • 17For he breakethme with a tempest, and multipliethmy woundswithoutcause. • 18He will not sufferme to take my breath, but fillethme with bitterness. • 19If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead? • 20If I justifymyself, mine own mouthshall condemnme: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also proveme perverse. • 21Though I were perfect, yet would I not knowmy soul: I would despisemy life. • 22This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeththe perfectand the wicked. • 23If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. • 24The earthis given into the hand of the wicked: he covereththe facesof the judgesthereof; if not, where, and who is he? • 25Now my daysare swifterthan a post: they flee away, they see no good.

Job 9 • 26They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eaglethat hasteth to the prey. • 27If I say, I will forgetmy complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfortmyself: • 28I am afraidof all my sorrows, I knowthat thou wilt not holdme innocent. • 29If I be wicked, why then labourI in vain? • 30If I washmyself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; • 31Yet shalt thou plungeme in the ditch, and mine own clothesshall abhorme. • 32For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. • 33Neither is there anydaysmanbetwixt us, that might layhis hand upon us both. • 34Let him take his rod away from me, and let nothis fear terrifyme: • 35Then would I speak, and not fearhim; but it is not so with me.

12. Job 10 • 1My soulis wearyof my life; I will leavemy complaintupon myself; I will speak in the bitternessof my soul. • 2I will say unto God, Do not condemnme; shew me wherefore thou contendestwith me. • 3Is it goodunto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despisethe workof thine hands, and shineupon the counselof the wicked? • 4Hast thou eyesof flesh? or seest thou as man seeth? • 5Are thy daysas the days of man? are thy yearsas man's days, • 6That thou enquirestafter mine iniquity, and searchestafter my sin? • 7Thou knowestthat I am not wicked; and there is nonethat can deliverout of thine hand. • 8Thine hands have made me and fashionedme together round about; yet thou dost destroyme. • 9Remember, I beseechthee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? • 10Hast thou not pouredme out as milk, and curdledme like cheese? • 11Thou hast clothedme with skinand flesh, and hast fencedme with bonesand sinews. • 12Thou hast grantedme lifeand favour, and thy visitationhath preservedmy spirit. • 13And these things hast thou hidin thine heart: I knowthat this is with thee. • 14If I sin, then thou markestme, and thou wilt not acquitme from mine iniquity. • 15If I be wicked, woeunto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction; • 16For it increaseth. Thou huntestme as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellousupon me. • 17Thou renewestthy witnesses against me, and increasestthine indignationupon me; changesand warare against me. • 18Wherefore then hast thou brought me forthout of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eyehad seen me! • 19I should have been as though I had notbeen; I should have been carriedfrom the wombto the grave. • 20Are notmy days few? ceasethen, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little, • 21Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darknessand the shadow of death; • 22A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the lightis as darkness.

13. Job 11 • 1Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, • 2Should notthe multitude of wordsbe answered? and should a man full of talkbe justified? • 3Should thy liesmake men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall noman make thee ashamed? • 4For thou hast said, My doctrineis pure, and I am cleanin thine eyes. • 5But oh that Godwould speak, and openhis lips against thee; • 6And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are doubleto that which is! Know therefore that Godexactethof thee less than thine iniquity deserveth. • 7Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almightyunto perfection? • 8It is as highas heaven; what canst thou do? deeperthan hell; what canst thou know? • 9The measurethereof is longerthan the earth, and broaderthan the sea. • 10If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinderhim? • 11For he knoweth vainmen: he seeth wickednessalso; will he notthen considerit? • 12For vain men would be wise, though man be bornlike a wild ass's colt. • 13If thou preparethine heart, and stretch out thine handstoward him; • 14If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwellin thy tabernacles. • 15For then shalt thou lift up thy facewithoutspot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: • 16Because thou shalt forgetthy misery, and rememberit as waters that pass away: • 17And thine ageshall be clearerthan the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. • 18And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt digabout thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety. • 19Also thou shalt lie down, and noneshall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suitunto thee. • 20But the eyesof the wickedshall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hopeshall be as the giving up of the ghost.

Job 12 • 1And Job answered and said, • 2No doubtbut ye are the people, and wisdomshall diewith you. • 3But I have understandingas well as you; I am not inferiorto you: yea, who knowethnotsuch things as these? • 4I am as one mockedof his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn. • 5He that is readyto slipwith his feet is as a lamp despisedin the thoughtof him that is at ease. • 6The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provokeGodare secure; into whose handGodbringeth abundantly. • 7But ask now the beasts, and they shall teachthee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tellthee: • 8Or speak to the earth, and it shall teachthee: and the fishes of the seashall declare unto thee. • 9Who knoweth notin all these that the hand of the LORDhath wroughtthis? • 10In whose hand is the soul of everylivingthing, and the breath of allmankind. • 11Doth notthe ear try words? and the mouth tastehis meat? • 12With the ancientis wisdom; and in length of days understanding. • 13With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding. • 14Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannotbe built again: he shutteth upa man, and there can be noopening. • 15Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. • 16With him is strength and wisdom: the deceivedand the deceiver are his. • 17He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools. • 18He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeththeir loinswith a girdle. • 19He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. • 20He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged. 21He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty. 22He discovereth deepthings out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. 23He increaseth the nations, and destroyeththem: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneththem again. 24He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeththem to wander in a wildernesswhere there is no way. 25 They gropein the darkwithoutlight, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunkenman.

Job 13 • 1Lo, mine eyehath seen all this, mine earhath heard and understoodit. • 2What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferiorunto you. • 3Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reasonwith God. • 4But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. • 5O that ye would altogether holdyour peace! and it should be your wisdom. • 6Hear nowmy reasoning, and hearken to the pleadingsof my lips. • 7Will ye speak wickedlyfor God? and talk deceitfullyfor him? • 8Will ye accepthis person? will ye contendfor God? • 9Is it goodthat he should searchyou out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mockhim? • 10He will surely reproveyou, if ye do secretly accept persons. • 11Shall nothis excellencymake you afraid? and his dread fall upon you? • 12Your remembrancesare like unto ashes, your bodiesto bodies of clay. • 13Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will. • 14Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and putmy lifein mine hand? • 15Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. • 16He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocriteshall notcome before him. • 17Hear diligentlymy speech, and my declarationwith your ears. • 18Beholdnow, I have ordered my cause; I knowthat I shall be justified. • 19Who is he that will pleadwith me? for now, if I holdmy tongue, I shall give up the ghost. • 20Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee. • 21Withdrawthine hand far from me: and let notthy dreadmake me afraid. • 22Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me. • 23How many are mine iniquitiesand sins? make me to knowmy transgressionand my sin. • 24Wherefore hidestthou thy face, and holdestme for thine enemy? • 25Wilt thou break a leaf drivento and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble? • 26For thou writest bitterthings against me, and makest me to possessthe iniquitiesof my youth. • 27Thou puttestmy feetalso in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto allmy paths; thou settest a printupon the heels of my feet. 28And he, as a rottenthing, consumeth, as a garmentthat is moth eaten.

Job 14 • 1Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. • 2He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleethalso as a shadow, and continueth not. • 3And doth thou openthine eyesupon such an one, and bringest me into judgmentwith thee? • 4Who can bring a clean thingout of an unclean? notone. • 5Seeing his daysare determined, the numberof his monthsare with thee, thou hast appointedhis boundsthat he cannotpass; • 6Turnfrom him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day. • 7For there is hopeof a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branchthereof will not cease. • 8Though the rootthereof wax oldin the earth, and the stockthereof diein the ground; • 9Yet through the scent of waterit will bud, and bring forth boughslike a plant. • 10But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? • 11As the waters failfrom the sea, and the flood decayethand drieth up: • 12So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavensbe nomore, they shall not awake, norbe raised out of their sleep. • 13O that thou wouldest hideme in the grave, that thou wouldest keepme secret, until thy wrathbe past, that thou wouldest appointme a set time, and rememberme! • 14If a man die, shall he live again? all the daysof my appointed timewill I wait, till my changecome. • 15Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desireto the workof thine hands. • 16For now thou numberestmy steps: dost thou not watchover my sin? • 17My transgressionis sealedup in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity. • 18And surely the mountains fallingcometh to nought, and the rockis removedout of his place. • 19The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which growout of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man. • 20Thou prevailestfor ever against him, and he passeth: thou changesthis countenance, and sendesthim away. • 21His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it notof them. • 22But his fleshupon him shall have pain, and his soulwithin him shall mourn.

Job 15 • 1Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, • 2Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fillhis bellywith the east wind? • 3Should he reasonwith unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? • 4Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayerbeforeGod. • 5For thy mouth uttereththine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. • 6Thine own mouth condemneththee, and notI: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. • 7Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills? • 8Hast thou heard the secretof God? and dost thou restrain wisdomto thyself? • 9What knowestthou, that we know not? what understandestthou, which is notin us? • 10With us are both the grayheadedand very agedmen, muchelderthan thy father. • 11Are the consolationsof Godsmallwith thee? is there any secretthing with thee? • 12Why doth thine heart carrythee away? and what do thy eyes winkat, • 13That thou turnestthy spirit againstGod, and lettest such wordsgo out of thy mouth? • 14What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? • 15Behold, he putteth no trustin his saints; yea, the heavensare not cleanin his sight. • 16How muchmore abominableand filthyis man, which drinketh iniquity like water? • 17I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; • 18Which wisemen have told from their fathers, and have not hidit: • 19Unto whom alone the earthwas given, and no stranger passed among them. • 20The wicked man travailethwith painall his days, and the numberof yearsis hiddento the oppressor. • 21A dreadful soundis in his ears: in prosperitythe destroyershall come upon him. • 22He believeth notthat he shall returnout of darkness, and he is waitedfor of the sword. • 23He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darknessis readyat his hand. • 24Trouble and anguishshall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. • 25For he stretcheth out his hand againstGod, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. • 26He runnethupon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bossesof his bucklers: • 27Because he coverethhis facewith his fatness, and maketh collopsoffaton his flanks.

18. Job 15 • 28And he dwellethin desolate cities, and in houseswhich no man inhabiteth, which are readyto become heaps. • 29He shall notbe rich, neithershall his substancecontinue, neithershall he prolongthe perfectionthereof upon the earth. • 30He shall not departout of darkness; the flameshall dry up his branches, and by the breathof his mouthshall he go away. • 31Let nothim that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. • 32It shall be accomplishedbefore his time, and his branchshall notbe green. • 33He shall shake off his unripe grapeas the vine, and shall cast off his floweras the olive. • 34For the congregation of hypocritesshall be desolate, and fireshall consume the tabernacles of bribery. • 35They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

19. Job 16 • 1Then Job answered and said, • 2I have heard many such things: miserable comfortersare ye all. • 3Shall vain wordshave an end? or what emboldeneththee that thou answerest? • 4I also could speak as ye do: if your soulwere in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shakemine headat you. • 5But I would strengthenyou with my mouth, and the movingof my lipsshould asswageyour grief. • 6Though I speak, my griefis not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased? • 7But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolateall my company. • 8And thou hast filledme with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face. • 9He tearethme in his wrath, who hatethme: he gnashethupon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpenethhis eyesupon me. • 10They have gapedupon me with their mouth; they have smittenme upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. • 11Godhath deliveredme to the ungodly, and turnedme over into the hands of the wicked. • 12I was at ease, but he hath brokenme asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shakenme to pieces, and setme up for his mark. • 13His archers compassme round about, he cleavethmy reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth outmy gallupon the ground. • 14He breakethme with breachupon breach, he runnethupon me like a giant. • 15I have sewed sackclothupon my skin, and defiledmy hornin the dust. • 16My faceis foulwith weeping, and on my eyelidsis the shadow of death; • 17Notfor anyinjusticein mine hands: also my prayeris pure. • 18O earth, cover notthou my blood, and let my cryhave no place. • 19Also now, behold, my witnessis in heaven, and my recordis on high. • 20My friends scornme: but mine eye poureth out tearsunto God. • 21O that one might pleadfor a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour! • 22When a few yearsare come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

20. Job 17 • 1My breathis corrupt, my daysare extinct, the gravesare readyfor me. • 2Are there not mockerswith me? and doth notmine eyecontinue in their provocation? • 3Lay downnow, put me in a suretywith thee; who is he that will strike hands with me? • 4For thou hast hidtheir heartfrom understanding: therefore shalt thou not exaltthem. • 5He that speaketh flatteryto his friends, even the eyesof his children shall fail. • 6He hath made me also a bywordof the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. • 7Mine eyealso is dimby reason of sorrow, and all my membersare as a shadow. • 8Uprightmen shall be astoniedat this, and the innocentshall stir up himself against the hypocrite. • 9The righteousalso shall holdon his way, and he that hath cleanhands shall be strongerand stronger. • 10But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find onewise man among you. • 11My daysare past, my purposesare broken off, even the thoughtsof my heart. • 12They changethe night into day: the lightis shortbecause of darkness. • 13If I wait, the graveis mine house: I have made my bedin the darkness. • 14I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. • 15And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? • 16They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our resttogether is in the dust.

21. Job 18 • 1Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, • 2How long will it be ereye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak. • 3Wherefore are we countedas beasts, and reputed vilein your sight? • 4He tearethhimself in his anger: shall the earthbe forsakenfor thee? and shall the rockbe removedout of his place? • 5Yea, the light of the wickedshall be put out, and the sparkof his fireshall not shine. • 6The lightshall be darkin his tabernacle, and his candleshall be put out with him. • 7The stepsof his strengthshall be straitened, and his own counselshall casthim down. • 8For he is castinto a netby his own feet, and he walkethupon a snare. • 9The ginshall take him by the heel, and the robbershall prevail against him. • 10The snareis laidfor him in the ground, and a trapfor him in the way. • 11Terrorsshall make him afraidon every side, and shall drivehim to his feet. • 12His strengthshall be hungerbitten, and destructionshall be readyat his side. • 13It shall devourthe strengthof his skin: even the firstborn of deathshall devourhis strength. • 14His confidenceshall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. • 15It shall dwellin his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstoneshall be scatteredupon his habitation. • 16His rootsshall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branchbe cut off. • 17His remembranceshall perishfrom the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. • 18He shall be drivenfrom lightinto darkness, and chased outof the world. • 19He shall neitherhave son nor nephew among his people, norany remainingin his dwellings. • 20They that come after him shall be astoniedat his day, as they that went before were affrighted. • 21Surelysuch are the dwellingsof the wicked, and this is the placeof him that knoweth not God.

22. Job 19 • 1Then Job answered and said, • 2How long will ye vexmy soul, and breakme in pieces with words? • 3These ten times have ye reproachedme: ye are not ashamedthat ye make yourselves strangeto me. • 4And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remainethwith myself. • 5If indeed ye will magnifyyourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach: • 6Knownow that Godhath overthrownme, and hath compassedme with his net. • 7Behold, I cry outof wrong, but I am notheard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. • 8He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darknessin my paths. • 9He hath strippedme of my glory, and taken the crownfrom my head. • 10He hath destroyedme on every side, and I am gone: and mine hopehath he removedlike a tree. • 11He hath also kindledhis wrath against me, and he countethme unto him as one of his enemies. • 12His troopscome together, and raise up their way against me, and encampround about my tabernacle. • 13He hath putmy brethren far from me, and mine acquaintanceare verily estrangedfrom me. • 14My kinsfolkhave failed, and my familiar friendshave forgottenme. • 15They that dwellin mine house, and my maids, countme for a stranger: I am an alienin their sight. • 16I called my servant, and he gave me noanswer; I intreatedhim with my mouth. • 17My breathis strangeto my wife, though I intreatedfor the children's sake of mine own body. • 18Yea, young children despisedme; I arose, and they spake against me. • 19All my inward friends abhorredme: and they whom I lovedare turned against me. • 20My bone cleavethto my skinand to my flesh, and I am escapedwith the skinof my teeth. • 21Have pityupon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of Godhath touchedme. • 22Why do ye persecuteme as God, and are not satisfiedwith my flesh? • 23Oh that my wordswere now written! oh that they were printed in a book! • 24That they were gravenwith an iron penand leadin the rockfor ever! • 25For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: • 26And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyesshall behold, and notanother; though my reinsbe consumedwithin me. 28But ye should say, Why persecutewe him, seeing the root of the matteris foundin me? 29Be ye afraidof the sword: for wrathbringeth the punishmentsof the sword, that ye may knowthere is a judgment.

23. Job 20 • 1Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, • 2Therefore do my thoughtscause me to answer, and for this I make haste. • 3I have heard the checkof my reproach, and the spiritof my understandingcauseth me to answer. • 4Knowestthou notthis of old, since man was placedupon earth, • 5That the triumphingof the wickedis short, and the joyof the hypocritebut for a moment? • 6Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reachunto the clouds; • 7Yet he shall perishfor ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he? • 8He shall fly away as a dream, and shall notbe found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. • 9The eyealso which saw him shall see him nomore; neithershall his placeany more beholdhim. • 10His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restoretheir goods. • 11His bonesare full of the sinof his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. • 12Though wickednessbe sweetin his mouth, though he hideit under his tongue; • 13Though he spareit, and forsakeit not; but keepit stillwithin his mouth: • 14Yet his meatin his bowelsis turned, it is the gall of aspswithin him. • 15He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomitthem upagain: Godshall castthem out of his belly. • 16He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongueshall slayhim. • 17He shall notsee the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. • 18That which he labouredfor shall he restore, and shall not swallowit down: according to his substanceshall the restitutionbe, and he shall not rejoicetherein. • 19Because he hath oppressedand hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an housewhich he buildednot; • 20Surelyhe shall not feel quietnessin his belly, he shall not saveof that which he desired. • 21There shall none of his meatbe left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. • 22In the fulnessof his sufficiencyhe shall be in straits: every hand of the wickedshall come upon him. • 23When he is about to fillhis belly, Godshall cast the furyof his wrathupon him, and shall rainit upon him while he is eating.

24. Job 20 • 24He shall fleefrom the iron weapon, and the bow of steelshall strikehim through. • 25It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering swordcometh out of his gall: terrorsare upon him. • 26Alldarknessshall be hidin his secret places: a firenot blownshall consumehim; it shall go illwith him that is leftin his tabernacle. • 27The heavenshall revealhis iniquity; and the earthshall rise up against him. • 28The increaseof his houseshall depart, and his goodsshall flow away in the dayof his wrath. • 29This is the portionof a wickedman from God, and the heritage appointedunto him by God.

25. Job 21 • 1But Job answered and said, • 2Hear diligentlymy speech, and let this be your consolations. • 3Sufferme that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on. • 4As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should notmy spiritbe troubled? • 5Markme, and be astonished, and layyour hand upon your mouth. • 6Even when I rememberI am afraid, and tremblingtaketh hold on my flesh. • 7Wherefore do the wickedlive, become old, yea, are mighty in power? • 8Their seedis establishedin their sightwith them, and their offspringbefore their eyes. • 9Their housesare safefrom fear, neitheris the rodof Godupon them. • 10Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth nother calf. • 11They sendforth their little oneslike a flock, and their children dance. • 12They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoiceat the soundof the organ. • 13They spendtheir days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. • 14Therefore they say unto God, Departfrom us; for we desire not the knowledgeof thy ways. • 15What is the Almighty, that we should servehim? and what profitshould we have, if we prayunto him? • 16Lo, their goodis notin their hand: the counselof the wickedis far from me. • 17How oft is the candleof the wickedput out! and how oft cometh their destructionupon them! Goddistributeth sorrowsin his anger. • 18They are as stubblebefore the wind, and as chaffthat the storm carrieth away. • 19Godlayeth uphis iniquityfor his children: he rewardethhim, and he shall knowit. • 20His eyesshall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrathof the Almighty. • 21For what pleasurehath he in his houseafter him, when the numberof his monthsis cut off in the midst? • 22Shall any teachGodknowledge? seeing he judgeththose that are high. • 23One diethin his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet. • 24His breastsare full of milk, and his bonesare moistened with marrow. • 25And another diethin the bitternessof his soul, and never eateth with pleasure. • 26They shall lie downalike in the dust, and the wormsshall coverthem.

26. Job 21 • 27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagineagainst me. • 28For ye say, Where is the houseof the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked? • 29Have ye notasked them that go by the way? and do ye not knowtheir tokens, • 30That the wickedis reservedto the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. • 31Who shall declarehis way to his face? and who shall repayhim what he hath done? • 32Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remainin the tomb. • 33The clods of the valleyshall be sweetunto him, and every man shall drawafter him, as there are innumerablebefore him. • 34How then comfortye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

27. Job 22 • 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, • 2Can a man be profitableunto God, as he that is wisemay be profitableunto himself? • 3Is it any pleasureto the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gainto him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? • 4Will he reprovethee for fearof thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? • 5Is notthy wickednessgreat? and thine iniquities infinite? • 6For thou hast taken a pledgefrom thy brother for nought, and stripped the nakedof their clothing. • 7Thou hast not given waterto the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden breadfrom the hungry. • 8But as for the mightyman, he had the earth; and the honourable man dweltin it. • 9Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherlesshave been broken. • 10Therefore snaresare round about thee, and sudden fear troubleththee; • 11Or darkness, that thou canst notsee; and abundance of waters coverthee. • 12Is notGodin the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! • 13And thou sayest, How doth Godknow? can he judgethrough the dark cloud? • 14Thick cloudsare a coveringto him, that he seeth not; and he walkethin the circuit of heaven. • 15Hast thou markedthe old way which wicked menhave trodden? • 16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundationwas overflown with a flood: • 17Which said unto God, Departfrom us: and what can the Almightydo for them? • 18Yet he filledtheir houses with goodthings: but the counsel of the wickedis far from me. • 19The righteoussee it, and are glad: and the innocent laughthem to scorn. • 20Whereas our substanceis not cut down, but the remnantof them the fire consumeth. • 21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby goodshall come unto thee. • 22Receive, I pray thee, the lawfrom his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. • 23If thou returnto the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquityfar from thy tabernacles. • 24Then shalt thou lay up goldas dust, and the gold of Ophiras the stones of the brooks. • 25Yea, the Almightyshall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. • 26For then shalt thou have thy delightin the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy faceunto God.

28. Job 22 • 27Thou shalt make thy prayerunto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt paythy vows. • 28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be establishedunto thee: and the lightshall shineupon thy ways. • 29When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. • 30He shall deliverthe island of the innocent: and it is deliveredby the purenessof thine hands.

29. Job 23 • 1Then Job answered and said, • 2Even to dayis my complaint bitter: my strokeis heavierthan my groaning. • 3Oh that I knewwhere I might findhim! that I might come even to his seat! • 4I would ordermy causebefore him, and fillmy mouthwith arguments. • 5I would knowthe wordswhich he would answer me, and understandwhat he would say unto me. • 6Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strengthin me. • 7There the righteousmight disputewith him; so should I be deliveredfor ever from my judge. • 8Behold, I go forward, but he is notthere; and backward, but I cannot perceivehim: • 9On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot beholdhim: he hidethhimself on the right hand, that I cannotsee him: • 10But he knoweththe way that I take: when he hath triedme, I shall come forth as gold. • 11My foothath heldhis steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. • 12Neitherhave I gone back from the commandmentof his lips; I have esteemedthe wordsof his mouthmore than my necessary food. • 13But he is in one mind, and who can turnhim? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. • 14For he performeth the thing that is appointedfor me: and many such things are with him. • 15Therefore am I troubledat his presence: when I consider, I am afraidof him. • 16For Godmaketh my heart soft, and the Almightytroublethme: • 17Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neitherhath he covered the darkness from my face.

30. Job 24 • 1Why, seeing timesare not hiddenfrom the Almighty, do they that knowhim notsee his days? • 2Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feedthereof. • 3They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge. • 4They turn the needyout of the way: the poor of the earth hidethemselves together. • 5Behold, as wild assesin the desert, go they forth to their work; risingbetimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth foodfor them and for their children. • 6They reap every one his cornin the field: and they gatherthe vintageof the wicked. • 7They cause the nakedto lodgewithoutclothing, that they have no covering in the cold. • 8They are wetwith the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rockfor want of a shelter. • 9They pluck the fatherlessfrom the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. • 10They causehim to go nakedwithoutclothing, and they take away the sheaffrom the hungry; • 11Which make oilwithin their walls, and treadtheir winepresses, and suffer thirst. • 12Men groanfrom out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet Godlayeth not follyto them. • 13They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the pathsthereof. • 14The murderer risingwith the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the nightis as a thief. • 15The eyealso of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eyeshall see me: and disguisethhis face. • 16In the darkthey digthrough houses, which they had markedfor themselves in the daytime: they know notthe light. • 17For the morningis to them even as the shadowof death: if one knowthem, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death. • 18He is swiftas the waters; their portionis cursed in the earth: he beholdeth notthe way of the vineyards. 19Drought and heat consumethe snow waters: so doth the gravethose which have sinned. 20The wombshall forgethim; the wormshall feed sweetly on him; he shall be nomore remembered; and wickednessshall be brokenas a tree. 21He evil entreateththe barrenthat beareth not: and doeth not goodto the widow. 22He drawethalso the mightywith his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life. 23Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyesare upon their ways. 24They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.  25And if it be notso now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

31. Job 25 • 1Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, • 2Dominionand fearare with him, he maketh peacein his high places. • 3Is there any numberof his armies? and upon whom doth nothis light arise? • 4How then can man be justifiedwith God? or how can he be cleanthat is born of a woman? • 5Beholdeven to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the starsare not purein his sight. • 6How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

32. Job 26 • 1But Job answered and said, • 2How hast thou helpedhim that is withoutpower? how savestthou the armthat hath no strength? • 3How hast thou counselledhim that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declaredthe thing as it is? • 4To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spiritcame from thee? • 5Dead things are formedfrom under the waters, and the inhabitantsthereof. • 6Hellis nakedbefore him, and destructionhath no covering. • 7He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. • 8He bindeth upthe watersin his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rentunder them. • 9He holdeth backthe faceof his throne, and spreadethhis cloudupon it. • 10He hath compassedthe waterswith bounds, until the dayand nightcome to an end. • 11The pillars of heaven trembleand are astonishedat his reproof. • 12He divideth the seawith his power, and by his understandinghe smiteth through the proud. • 13By his spirithe hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. • 14Lo, these are partsof his ways: but how little a portionis heard of him? but the thunderof his powerwho can understand?

33. Job 27 • 1Moreover Jobcontinued his parable, and said, • 2As Godliveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexedmy soul; • 3All the while my breathis in me, and the spiritof Godis in my nostrils; • 4My lipsshall not speak wickedness, normy tongue utter deceit. • 5God forbidthat I should justifyyou: till I dieI will not removemine integrityfrom me. • 6My righteousnessI hold fast, and will notlet it go: my heartshall not reproachme so long as I live. • 7Let mine enemybe as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous. • 8For what is the hopeof the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? • 9Will Godhear his crywhen troublecometh upon him? • 10Will he delighthimself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? • 11I will teachyou by the hand of God: that which is with the Almightywill I not conceal. • 12Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain? • 13This is the portionof a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receiveof the Almighty. • 14If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspringshall notbe satisfied with bread. • 15Those that remainof him shall be buried in death: and his widowsshall not weep. • 16Though he heap up silveras the dust, and prepare raimentas the clay; • 17He may prepareit, but the justshall put it on, and the innocentshall divide the silver. • 18He buildethhis houseas a moth, and as a booththat the keepermaketh. • 19The richman shall lie down, but he shall notbe gathered: he openethhis eyes, and he is not. • 20Terrors take holdon him as waters, a tempest stealethhim away in the night. • 21The east wind carriethhim away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurlethhim out of his place. • 22For Godshall castupon him, and not spare: he would fain fleeout of his hand. • 23Men shall claptheir hands at him, and shall hisshim out of his place.

34. Job 28 • 1Surelythere is a vein for the silver, and a place for goldwhere they fineit. • 2Ironis taken out of the earth, and brassis moltenout of the stone. • 3He setteth an end to darkness, and searchethoutallperfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death. • 4The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgottenof the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men. • 5As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. • 6The stonesof it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. • 7There is a pathwhich no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eyehath notseen: • 8The lion's whelpshave not troddenit, northe fierce lionpassed by it. • 9He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneththe mountainsby the roots. • 10He cutteth out riversamong the rocks; and his eye seeth everypreciousthing. • 11He bindeth the floodsfrom overflowing; and the thing that is hidbringeth he forth to light. • 12But where shall wisdombe found? and where is the place of understanding? • 13Man knoweth notthe pricethereof; neitheris it foundin the land of the living. • 14The depthsaith, It is notin me: and the seasaith, It is notwith me. • 15It cannotbe gotten for gold, neithershall silverbe weighedfor the pricethereof. • 16It cannotbe valuedwith the goldof Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. • 17The goldand the crystalcannot equalit: and the exchangeof it shall notbe for jewels of fine gold. • 18No mentionshall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdomis aboverubies. • 19The topazof Ethiopiashall not equalit, neithershall it be valued with pure gold. • 20Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? • 21Seeing it is hidfrom the eyes of allliving, and keptclosefrom the fowls of the air. • 22Destruction and deathsay, We have heard the famethereof with our ears. • 23Godunderstandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the placethereof. 24For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the wholeheaven; 25To make the weightfor the winds; and he weigheth the watersby measure. 26When he made a decreefor the rain, and a way for the lightningof the thunder: 27Then did he see it, and declareit; he preparedit, yea, and searchedit out. 28And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 29 • 1Moreover Jobcontinued his parable, and said, • 2Oh that I were as in months past, as in the dayswhen Godpreservedme; • 3When his candle shinedupon my head, and when by his lightI walkedthrough darkness; • 4As I was in the daysof my youth, when the secretof Godwas upon my tabernacle; • 5When the Almightywas yet with me, when my childrenwere about me; • 6When I washedmy stepswith butter, and the rock pouredme outrivers of oil; • 7When I went out to the gatethrough the city, when I preparedmy seatin the street! • 8The young men saw me, and hidthemselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. • 9The princes refrained talking, and laidtheir hand on their mouth. • 10The nobles heldtheir peace, and their tongue cleavedto the roofof their mouth. • 11When the ear heard me, then it blessedme; and when the eye saw me, it gave witnessto me: • 12Because I delivered the poorthat cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to helphim. • 13The blessingof him that was ready to perishcame upon me: and I caused the widow'sheart to sing for joy. • 14I put on righteousness, and it clothedme: my judgmentwas as a robeand a diadem. • 15I was eyes to the blind, and feetwas I to the lame. • 16I was a fatherto the poor: and the causewhich I knew notI searched out. • 17And I brake the jawsof the wicked, and plucked the spoilout of his teeth. • 18Then I said, I shall diein my nest, and I shall multiplymy daysas the sand. • 19My rootwas spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all nightupon my branch. • 20My glorywas freshin me, and my bowwas renewedin my hand. • 21Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silenceat my counsel. • 22After my wordsthey spake not again; and my speech droppedupon them. • 23And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. • 24If I laughedon them, they believed it not; and the lightof my countenancethey cast not down. • 25I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dweltas a kingin the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

36. Job 30 • 1But nowthey that are youngerthan I have me in derision, whose fathersI would have disdainedto have setwith the dogsof my flock. • 2Yea, whereto might the strengthof their hands profitme, in whom old agewas perished? • 3For wantand faminethey were solitary; fleeinginto the wildernessin former time desolateand waste. • 4Who cut up mallowsby the bushes, and juniper rootsfor their meat. • 5They were drivenforth from among men, (they criedafter them as after a thief;) • 6To dwellin the cliffsof the valleys, in cavesof the earth, and in the rocks. • 7Among the bushesthey brayed; under the nettlesthey were gathered together. • 8They were childrenoffools, yea, children of basemen: they were vilerthan the earth. • 9And nowam I their song, yea, I am their byword. • 10They abhorme, they fleefar from me, and spare notto spitin my face. • 11Because he hath loosedmy cord, and afflictedme, they have also let loose the bridlebefore me. • 12Upon my right hand risethe youth; they push away my feet, and they raise upagainst me the ways of their destruction. • 13They marmy path, they setforward my calamity, they have no helper. • 14They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolationthey rolledthemselves upon me. • 15Terrorsare turnedupon me: they pursuemy soulas the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud. • 16And nowmy soulis poured out upon me; the days of afflictionhave taken hold upon me. • 17My bonesare piercedin me in the night season: and my sinewstake no rest. • 18By the great forceof my diseaseis my garment changed: it bindethme about as the collarof my coat. • 19He hath castme into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes. • 20I cryunto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardestme not. • 21Thou art become cruelto me: with thy stronghand thou opposestthyself against me. • 22Thou liftestme up to the wind; thou causest me to rideupon it, and dissolvestmy substance. • 23For I knowthat thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. • 24Howbeithe will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cryin his destruction.

37. Job 30 • 25Did notI weepfor him that was in trouble? was notmy soul grievedfor the poor? • 26When I looked for good, then evilcame unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness. • 27My bowels boiled, and rested not: the daysof affliction preventedme. • 28I went mourningwithout the sun: I stood up, and I criedin the congregation. • 29I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls. • 30My skin is black upon me, and my bonesare burnedwith heat. • 31My harpalso is turned to mourning, and my organinto the voiceof them that weep.

38. Job 31 • 1I made a covenantwith mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? • 2For what portionof Godis there from above? and what inheritanceof the Almightyfrom on high? • 3Is not destructionto the wicked? and a strange punishmentto the workers of iniquity? • 4Doth nothe seemy ways, and count all my steps? • 5If I have walked with vanity, or if my foothath hasted to deceit; • 6Let me be weighedin an even balancethat Godmay knowmine integrity. • 7If my stephath turnedout of the way, and mine heart walkedafter mine eyes, and if any blothath cleavedto mine hands; • 8Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspringbe rooted out. • 9If mine hearthave been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid waitat my neighbour's door; • 10Then let my wifegrind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. • 11For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquityto be punishedby the judges. • 12For it is a firethat consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase. • 13If I did despise the causeof my manservantor of my maidservant, when they contendedwith me; • 14What then shall I do when Godriseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? • 15Did nothe that made me in the wombmake him? and did not one fashionus in the womb? • 16If I have withheld the poorfrom their desire, or have caused the eyesof the widow to fail; • 17Or have eatenmy morselmyself alone, and the fatherlesshath noteaten thereof; • 18(For from my youthhe was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guidedher from my mother's womb;) • 19If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; • 20If his loinshave not blessedme, and if he were not warmedwith the fleeceof my sheep; • 21If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate: • 22Then let mine arm fallfrom my shoulder blade, and mine arm be brokenfrom the bone. • 23For destructionfrom Godwas a terrorto me, and by reasonof his highnessI could not endure. • 24If I have made goldmy hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; • 25If I rejoicebecause my wealthwas great, and because mine hand had gotten much; • 26If I beheld the sunwhen it shined, or the moon walkingin brightness;

Job 31 • 27And my hearthath been secretly enticed, or my mouthhath kissedmy hand: • 28This also were an iniquityto be punishedby the judge: for I should have deniedthe Godthat is above. • 29If I rejoiceat the destructionof him that hatedme, or lifted up myself when evil foundhim: • 30Neitherhave I sufferedmy mouthto sinby wishing a curseto his soul. • 31If the men of my tabernaclesaid not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannotbe satisfied. • 32The strangerdid not lodgein the street: but I openedmy doorsto the traveller. • 33If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom: • 34Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrifyme, that I kept silence, and went notout of the door? • 35Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desireis, that the Almightywould answer me, and that mine adversaryhad written a book. • 36SurelyI would take it upon my shoulder, and bindit as a crownto me. • 37I would declareunto him the numberof my steps; as a princewould I go nearunto him. • 38If my land cry against me, or that the furrowslikewise thereof complain; • 39If I have eaten the fruitsthereof without money, or have causedthe ownersthereof to losetheir life: • 40Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

40. Job 32 • 1So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. • 2Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: againstJob was his wrath kindled, because he justifiedhimself rather than God. • 3Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemnedJob. • 4Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he. • 5When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled. • 6And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. • 7I said, Daysshould speak, and multitude of yearsshould teach wisdom. • 8But there is a spirit in man: and the inspirationof the Almightygiveth them understanding. • 9Great men are not always wise: neitherdo the aged understand judgment. • 10Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion. • 11Behold, I waitedfor your words; I gave earto your reasons, whilst ye searched outwhat to say. • 12Yea, I attendedunto you, and, behold, there was noneof you that convincedJob, or that answered his words: • 13Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: Godthrustethhim down, not man. • 14Now he hath not directedhis words against me: neitherwill I answer him with your speeches. • 15They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. • 16When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered nomore;) • 17I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion. • 18For I am full of matter, the spiritwithin me constrainethme. • 19Behold, my bellyis as winewhich hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. • 20I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will openmy lips and answer. • 21Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. • 22For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

41. Job 33 • 1Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words. • 2Behold, now I have openedmy mouth, my tonguehath spoken in my mouth. • 3My wordsshall be of the uprightnessof my heart: and my lipsshall utter knowledge clearly. • 4The spiritof God hath made me, and the breathof the Almighty hath given me life. • 5If thou canst answer me, set thy words in orderbefore me, stand up. • 6Behold, I am according to thy wishin God'sstead: I also am formedout of the clay. • 7Behold, my terrorshall notmake thee afraid, neithershall my hand be heavyupon thee. • 8Surelythou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voiceof thy words, saying, • 9I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neitheris there iniquityin me. • 10Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he countethme for his enemy, • 11He putteth my feetin the stocks, he markethall my paths. • 12Behold, in this thou art notjust: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. • 13Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not accountof any of his matters. • 14For Godspeaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. • 15In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep fallethupon men, in slumberingsupon the bed; • 16Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeththeir instruction, • 17That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pridefrom man. • 18He keepeth back his soulfrom the pit, and his lifefrom perishingby the sword. • 19He is chastenedalso with painupon his bed, and the multitudeof his boneswith strong pain: • 20So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. • 21His fleshis consumed away, that it cannotbe seen; and his bonesthat were notseen stick out. • 22Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his lifeto the destroyers. • 23If there be a messengerwith him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: • 24Then he is graciousunto him, and saith, Deliverhim from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. • 25His fleshshall be fresherthan a child's: he shall returnto the daysof his youth:

42. Job 33 • 26He shall prayunto God, and he will be favourableunto him: and he shall see his facewith joy: for he will renderunto man his righteousness. • 27He lookethupon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and pervertedthat which was right, and it profitedme not; • 28He will deliverhis soulfrom going into the pit, and his lifeshall see the light. • 29Lo, all these things workethGodoftentimeswith man, • 30To bring back his soulfrom the pit, to be enlightenedwith the light of the living. • 31Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: holdthy peace, and I will speak. • 32If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justifythee. • 33If not, hearken unto me: holdthy peace, and I shall teachthee wisdom.

43. Job 34 • 1 Furthermore Elihu answered and said, • 2Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give earunto me, ye that have knowledge. • 3For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat. • 4Let us chooseto us judgment: let us knowamong ourselves what is good. • 5For Jobhath said, I am righteous: and Godhath taken away my judgment. • 6Should I lie against my right? my woundis incurablewithout transgression. • 7What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? • 8Which goeth in companywith the workers of iniquity, and walkethwith wicked men. • 9For he hath said, It profitetha man nothingthat he should delighthimself with God. • 10Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. • 11For the workof a man shall he renderunto him, and cause every man to findaccording to his ways. • 12Yea, surely God will notdo wickedly, neitherwill the Almighty pervert judgment. • 13Who hath given him a chargeover the earth? or who hath disposedthe whole world? • 14If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; • 15All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust. • 16If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voiceof my words. • 17Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemnhim that is most just? • 18Is it fitto say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? • 19How much lessto him that accepteth notthe persons of princes, nor regardeth the richmore than the poor? for they all are the workof his hands. • 20In a momentshall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mightyshall be taken away without hand. • 21For his eyesare upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. • 22There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquitymay hidethemselves. • 23For he will not layupon man more than right; that he should enterinto judgmentwith God. • 24He shall break in pieces mightymen without number, and set others in their stead. • 25Therefore he knoweththeir works, and he overturneththem in the night, so that they are destroyed.

44. Job 34 • 26He strikeththem as wicked men in the open sight of others; • 27Because they turnedback from him, and would not consider any of his ways: • 28So that they causethe cry of the poorto come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. • 29When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: • 30That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared. • 31Surelyit is meetto be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: • 32That which I see not teachthou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do nomore. • 33Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompenseit, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and notI: therefore speak what thou knowest. • 34Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wiseman hearken unto me. • 35Jobhath spoken without knowledge, and his wordswere without wisdom. • 36My desireis that Jobmay be triedunto the endbecause of his answers for wicked men. • 37For he addeth rebellionunto his sin, he clappethhis hands among us, and multipliethhis words againstGod.

Job 35 • 1Elihu spake moreover, and said, • 2Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousnessis more than God's? • 3For thou saidst, What advantagewill it be unto thee? and, What profitshall I have, if I be cleansedfrom my sin? • 4I will answer thee, and thy companionswith thee. • 5Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the cloudswhich are higherthan thou. • 6If thou sinnest, what doest thou againsthim? or if thy transgressionsbe multiplied, what doest thou unto him? • 7If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receivethhe of thine hand? • 8Thy wickednessmay hurta man as thou art; and thy righteousnessmay profitthe son of man. • 9By reasonof the multitude of oppressionsthey make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. • 10But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night; • 11Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? • 12There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. • 13SurelyGodwill not hear vanity, neitherwill the Almightyregardit. • 14Although thou sayest thou shalt notsee him, yet judgmentis before him; therefore trustthou in him. • 15But now, because it is notso, he hath visitedin his anger; yet he knoweth it notin great extremity: • 16Therefore doth Jobopenhis mouthin vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

46. Job 36 • 1Elihu also proceeded, and said, • 2Sufferme a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God'sbehalf. • 3I will fetchmy knowledgefrom afar, and will ascribe righteousnessto my Maker. • 4For truly my wordsshall notbe false: he that is perfect in knowledgeis with thee. • 5Behold, Godis mighty, and despiseth notany: he is mighty in strengthand wisdom. • 6He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor. • 7He withdraweth nothis eyesfrom the righteous: but with kingsare they on the throne; yea, he doth establishthem for ever, and they are exalted. • 8And if they be bound in fetters, and be holdenin cords of affliction; • 9Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressionsthat they have exceeded. • 10He openethalso their ear to discipline, and commandeththat they returnfrom iniquity. • 11If they obeyand servehim, they shall spendtheir daysin prosperity, and their yearsin pleasures. • 12But if they obey not, they shall perishby the sword, and they shall die without knowledge. • 13But the hypocritesin heart heap up wrath: they cry notwhen he bindeththem. • 14They diein youth, and their lifeis among the unclean. • 15He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. • 16Even so would he have removedthee out of the straitinto a broadplace, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy tableshould be fulloffatness. • 17But thou hast fulfilledthe judgmentof the wicked: judgment and justicetake holdon thee. • 18Because there is wrath, bewarelest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliverthee. • 19Will he esteemthy riches? no, not gold, norall the forcesof strength. • 20Desire notthe night, when people are cut off in their place. • 21Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction. • 22Behold, Godexaltethby his power: who teachethlike him? • 23Who hath enjoinedhim his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity? • 24Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold. • 25Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.

47. Job 36 • 26Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out. • 27For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rainaccording to the vapourthereof: • 28Which the clouds do dropand distilupon manabundantly. • 29Also can any understand the spreadingsof the clouds, or the noiseof his tabernacle? • 30Behold, he spreadethhis lightupon it, and covereththe bottom of the sea. • 31For by them judgethhe the people; he giveth meat in abundance. • 32With cloudshe covereth the light; and commandethit notto shineby the cloud that cometh betwixt. • 33The noisethereof sheweth concerning it, the cattlealso concerning the vapour.

48. Job 37 • 1At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place. • 2Hear attentivelythe noiseof his voice, and the soundthat goeth out of his mouth. • 3He directethit under the whole heaven, and his lightningunto the ends of the earth. • 4After it a voice roareth: he thunderethwith the voice of his excellency; and he will not staythem when his voice is heard. • 5Godthundereth marvellouslywith his voice; greatthings doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. • 6For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength. • 7He sealeth upthe hand of every man; that all men may know his work. • 8Then the beastsgo into dens, and remainin their places. • 9Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and coldout of the north. • 10By the breathof Godfrostis given: and the breadthof the watersis straitened. • 11Also by wateringhe wearieththe thick cloud: he scatterethhis bright cloud: • 12And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeththem upon the faceof the worldin the earth. • 13He causethit to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy. • 14Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God. • 15Dost thou knowwhen Goddisposedthem, and causedthe lightof his cloudto shine? • 16Dost thou knowthe balancingsof the clouds, the wondrous worksof him which is perfect in knowledge? • 17How thy garmentsare warm, when he quieteth the earthby the south wind? • 18Hast thou with him spread outthe sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass? • 19Teachus what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness. • 20Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up. • 21And now men see notthe bright lightwhich is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseththem. • 22Fair weathercometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty. • 23Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict. • 24Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

49. Job 38 • 1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, • 2Who is this that darkeneth counselby words without knowledge? • 3Gird up now thy loinslike a man; for I will demandof thee, and answer thou me. • 4Where wast thou when I laidthe foundationsof the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. • 5Who hath laid the measuresthereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the lineupon it? • 6Whereupon are the foundationsthereof fastened? or who laid the corner stonethereof; • 7When the morning stars sang together, and all the sonsof Godshouted for joy? • 8Or who shut upthe sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued outof the womb? • 9When I made the cloud the garmentthereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingbandfor it, • 10And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, • 11And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed? • 12Hast thou commanded the morningsince thy days; and caused the dayspringto know his place; • 13That it might take holdof the ends of the earth, that the wickedmight be shaken out of it? • 14It is turnedas clay to the seal; and they standas a garment. • 15And from the wickedtheir lightis withholden, and the high armshall be broken. • 16Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? • 17Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? • 18Hast thou perceivedthe breadth of the earth? declareif thou knowestit all. • 19Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the placethereof, • 20That thou shouldest take it to the boundthereof, and that thou shouldest knowthe paths to the housethereof? • 21Knowestthou it, because thou wast then born? or because the numberof thy days is great? • 22Hast thou enteredinto the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, • 23Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? • 24By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east windupon the earth? • 25Who hath divided a watercoursefor the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; • 26To causeit to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is noman; • 27To satisfy the desolate and wasteground; and to cause the bud of the tender herbto spring forth?

50. Job 38 • 28Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew? • 29Out of whose wombcame the ice? and the hoaryfrost of heaven, who hath genderedit? • 30The watersare hidas with a stone, and the faceof the deepis frozen. • 31Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? • 32Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guideArcturus with his sons? • 33Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? • 34Canst thou lift up thy voiceto the clouds, that abundance of watersmay coverthee? • 35Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are? • 36Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart? • 37Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven, • 38When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together? • 39Wilt thou hunt the preyfor the lion? or fill the appetiteof the young lions, • 40When they couchin their dens, and abidein the covertto lie in wait? • 41Who providethfor the ravenhis food? when his young ones cryunto God, they wanderfor lack of meat.
