A. The Life of Siddhartha Guatama (con’t) • Met the injured and the sick and witnessed a funeral • Met a monk who was at peace even with the negative parts of life • Left his wife and newborn son to become a monk
B. Siddhartha’s Search for Wisdom • He asked Hindu monks, but was not happy with their answers • Under a fig tree he reached understanding • This wisdom made him the “Awakened One” – the Buddha • Beliefs of Buddha • Reincarnation Hindu • Karma • Search for peace by ending suffering
B. Siddhartha’s Search for Wisdom • 4 Noble Truths • Life is filled with suffering • Suffering is caused by people wanting more: • Power • Pleasure • Longer life • Suffering can end if people stop wanting things • People must follow 8 basic laws if they want to stop wanting things
B. Siddhartha’s Search for Wisdom • 8 fold path • Basic laws from the 4 noble truths • Not too easy/ not too strict = middle way • He continued to travel & teach • He made it back to his father’s castle • His father became a Buddhist
C. Spread of Buddhism • Monks spread it all over southern Asia • Different Schools and beliefs have developed • Some believe that Buddha was god/ some don’t • All follow his teachings
