Peter Voulkos The Grand-Daddy of All Modern Ceramic Arts
Peter Voulkosby Jim Leedy • "He is the sum result of everything in his life and the world around him - at one moment he flashes forward to break new ground, at another he moves backward to reach for past experiences and drag them into the future. Yet he still has the sincerity and directness of a child while searching for cosmic answers." • Jim Leedy gives an honest but personal account of the life of Peter Voulkos, based on a relationship and friendship spanning nearly half a century. Includes an interview and many photographs.

Education 1952 Master of Fine Arts, California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland 1951 Bachelor of Science in Applied Art, Montana State College, Bozeman Voulkos' best work is a primeval statement, the product of an internalized primitivism. In his plates, stacks and "ice buckets", he returns to the wild and pagan heart of making art.The stacks radiate an immanent power. They are great phallic presences asserting themselves. Voulkos' work is unapologetically macho, but his is a machismo that is so honest a statement of who the artist is that to hide it or camouflage it or tame it would be an act of criminal dishonesty.
