Transcendentalism What is it? - A religious and philosophical movement that developed during the late 1820s in the Eastern part of the United States. In was essentially a “protest” against the traditional state of spirituality.
Transcendentalism v Romanticism Core Beliefs of Transcendentalism: • People are inherently good • Nature is restorative • Society ultimately corrupts people • People are at their best when they are independent and self-reliant Key Traits of Romanticism: • Focus on nature • Focus on the individual • Focus on the imagination • Elevation of the Byronic Hero (rebel against authority and conventional society)
