K-STATERESEARCH andEXTENSION Youth PQA Minimum Standards 2005 Julie Voge Extension Youth Coordinator
Welcome Please read through the following slides concerning PQA for Kansas Youth in 2005. Remember that this truly only applies to those youth that are planning on showing swine at the Kansas State Fair or the KS. Junior Livestock Show in 2005 and beyond. Counties still have the option to control their own programming at the county level for those youth that are only showing at the county fair. I hope you will understand the true education involved with this program and make it a part of your education! Julie Voge
Age • Determined by January 1 of the current year • Under 8 – parent should accompany child in education classes, cannot be certified • May sell under parents Level III number • Parents cannot become certified at youth PQA meeting, must go through adult training • 19 and over is considered adult – must go through PQA Level III certification
Re-certification Period • Youth 8-11 – annually by attending education program • Youth 12-14 – either annually attend education program or by testing (70% is passing) • Youth 15-18 – either annually attend education program or by testing (70% is passing) • Once certified by test, not required to re-certify until next age division is reached • When youth reach next age bracket, they must retest at the new skill level
Re-certification Period • You will print off and grade exams from the internet once you receive your username/password from the NPB (http://pqa.porkboard.org) • No supplemental information may be used during testing, closed book • Youth may attempt to pass exam three times in one sitting – then must attend a Youth PQA class before attempting to test again
Content • Ways to think outside the box! • Make sure you print the answer key immediately after printing your exams, if you don’t it won’t match up with the questions! • At the beginning of each year, print off a total of six exams – 3 intermediate exams and 3 advanced exams. Make copies of each exam and place in a file labeled first try, second try and third try. Then you won’t have to dig around on the computer if you need a second attempt exam and so on! You will have the copies readily available to you.
Educators • State Youth Coordinators serve as trainers for the state approved local youth PQA educators • Educators must be a veterinarian, extension personnel, or a high-school or college ag instructor • Only state approved educators are qualified to submit name and contact information of youth to the NPB
Educators • Approved educators may assemble training team at the local level • These local volunteers and adult leaders must be certified in adult PQA Level III • One state approved educator must be present during the admin of a youth PQA exam
Educators • Approved educators must attend a training session at least once every three years for updates • Educators are responsible for submitting names and contact info to the NPB for the youth that qualify, (http://pqa.porkboard.org) is the quickest way to register your youth on-line.
Content • NPB (National Pork Board) youth materials or NPB approved state quality assurance program must be used – if you are using the book and the enclosed CD you are state approved. Otherwise send me a copy of your materials and I’ll get them approved. • All GPP’s (Good Production Practices) are ‘addressed’ annually • A portion may be taught in depth each year, provided that all 9 are covered over a 3 year period (there are really ’10’ but the 10th GPP is simply a reminder and doesn’t cover any new material)
Content • Key learning objectives must be addressed • Interactive/learning activities are strongly encouraged (please review these in your booklet and incorporate into you program – not only do they help with learning, they also take a little time to complete • Minimum of 1 hour of programming, is recommended to cover 3 GPP’s annually in the program (20 minutes per GPP)
Content • Ways to think outside the box! • Project leaders that qualify could cover one GPP during project meetings for a length of 20 minutes per GPP and meet the requirements for PQA certification as long as three were covered in depth and the other 6 were addressed to the group
Frequently Asked Questions • Is there a take home option for the youth to study? Not at this point but NPB is working on it for next year. • Can I still send in the cards for data entry? Yes, it just will take up to four weeks to get a number back. • What if I tested a youth in May of 2003? Anyone that certified last year is not due for re-certification until that day in 2005. After 2005 all current rules apply to those that had previously tested before Feb. of 2004 • When do we have to have the youth certified by? June 15th is the nomination deadline. The youth will need their PQA number in order to complete their swine nomination form.
Now what do I do? • Now that you have read all the previous slides, there are two final things you need to do before I can turn your name and info into the NPB and allow you to become certified. • 1. Email me your name, complete address, county, email, fax and phone to jvoge@ksu.edu • 2. Then you need to call me or in some cases I will call you after I receive the email, and I will ask you a few questions to make sure everything is understood clearly. 785-532-1264.
