Consulting Approach for Statistical Analysis:Targeting Questions Presenter: Vasilis Pavlopoulos Decision making for splenic hemangiosarcoma on dogs
Researcher’s Part Consultant’s Part • Problem statement • Variables – obvious and potential ones • Specific Aims • Understanding the problem’s nature • Explaining the statistical significance • Production of results
Researcher’s Part Hypothesis: We hypothesized that D-dimers would be significantly increased in dogs with hemangiosarcoma vs other splenic or liver disease and that D-dimers will decrease when disease is controlled. Specific Aims: To evaluate D-dimers in patients with hemangiosarcoma vs other liver and splenic masses prior to treatment to establish the specificity and sensitivity of D-dimers as a biomarker for hemangiosarcoma. To evaluate changes in D-dimers after appropriate therapy with different procedures, as a pilot study for using D-dimers to monitor for hemangiosarcoma disease progression. Preliminary knowledge: D-dimers nature (and any other potential variable), previous studies, research design (if it is already designed), time table.
Consultant’s Part • Potential Pitfalls: • Design assumptions • Sample size • False positives and other test errors. • Specific Aims: • Results that are easily implemented • Role of the research (for obtaining grants or for publication purposes) • Morals and Ethics.
