Every state maintains an extensive array of statutory controls to regulate dissemination and protection of criminal history record information
SEARCH Compendium useful as a tool to compare various state approaches to privacy and access issues • But is not a complete or all-inclusive listing
1974 – First compendium assembled by Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) • 1979 – SEARCH begins working with LEAA • 1981 – SEARCH begins working with Bureau of Justice Statistics
1981 – SEARCH and BJS publish updated compendium supplement • Additional supplements published in: 1984, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, and 2002
2005 – Each state asked to review listings and provide corrections or additions • 2006 – Responses received and incorporated into SEARCH Compendium • Online version completed
