SERENATE : extension of research networks into education and other user communities Sabine Jaume-Rajaonia RENATER TERENA Executive Member Jaume@renater.fr
Who are these users? • Schools • students with 24x7 access • hospitals • libraries • Museums • Archives • Ministries /funding bodies • SMEs for research activities • Any others?
Answers to the SERENATE USER questionnaire (1) « Non research » users : • Do and need to access to large database for consultation and down load of files • Do Use the National Research Network (also for content) • Want to use networking for : distance collaboration, access to data bases and forum, file download, distributed computing, virtual communities, client-server services, distance learning, videoconferencing • Are involved in collaborative projects : both within Europe and outside Europe • Are concerned by Privacy, confidentiality, Authentification, security issues
Answers to the SERENATE USER questionnaire (2) • Limitation due to network facilities • Slow network hardware, low bandwidth, unstability of the network, bandwidth costs, « human resistance » , limitations in regulation, software incompatibilities, intellectual property, campus network • Networks to improve in terms of : • speed, bandwidth, hardware, internet portals, database, videoconferencing, applications, storage, security • Use limited by what type of connections? • Around 45% users do not see any limitation, • For the others : 50% by local networks, 24% by international, 13% by National, 13% by Regional
What are their needs? • The current needs + the future trends are necessary to understand in order to serve at best the user. • Indeed they have consequences in terms of : • Service provided by NRENs : a network +value added services (security, data storage, help desk …) • Infrastructure of the network (who do we reach?) and levels of quality of service • and of course : funding
SERENATE Case studies Each case study should be written in English, an in about 10 pages. Content : 1-FACTS -who (define the user adressed in this study) is connected, how many, how is it connected? -How is the NREN involved? -What do they use the network for? -What services do they need (AAA, helpesk, etc...) 2-ISSUES -Organisation and finances -Compatibility with Acceptable Use Policy -Issues regarding competition with commercial ISP -Impact on NRENs (traffic, services, etc..) 3-CONCLUSION -experience : success or failure ? -why : success and risk factors 4-REFERENCES and POINTERS
What do we have so far? ·DANEMARK : -Topic : Network for schools -writer available : can contract with UNI-C ·the NETHERLANDS : -Topic : Student access to the Internet by Fiber to the Dormitory -a report is available but not worth using as it is. ·GERMANY : -Topic : Connecting hospitals to DFN ·FRANCE : -Topic : the Content loop (culture and teaching content on the core of the network) ·PORTUGAL : -Topic : connecting schools on the NREN Other ideas : ·SWEDEN : connecting museums? ·UK : connecting further education?
We need your experience ! • Other case studies are needed : please contact me during the workshop. • Thanks
