  1. Exeter Cathedral How can we possibly raise £8 million in Devon? HRH The Prince of Wales – Patron of the Third Millennium Campaign

  2. 1. Case for Support Start with the Vision and Purpose: What are we here for? Why do we want to do this? What benefits will it bring? How do we tell the story?

  3. A treasure of international renown, visited by thousands of tourists, yet a treasure not always appreciated by those who live near to it. Exeter Cathedral is a building of architectural significance. It is the best and most complete, decorated Gothic Cathedral, with the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling, in the world.

  4. The Cathedral is a welcome place. Concerts, charity occasions, educational visits – there is something happening every day. And all this on top of the services that are said and sung daily.

  5. The Cathedral is a great tourist attraction which adds to Exeter’s prosperity every year. It is there for all people, whatever their needs. And this has been its role for almost 1,000 years.

  6. However, all this comes at a price. The Third Millennium Campaign has been launched to raise £8 million to secure the future of the Cathedral and its surrounding buildings; the music tradition; and the library and archives.

  7. We are seeking £3 million to preserve the Cathedral’s choral tradition, run more musical outreach programmes in Devon schools, and fund Cathedral school scholarships and bursaries for gifted children of all backgrounds. We also need to raise £1 million to maintain and refurbish the great organ.

  8. The Campaign is also raising £3 million for the fabric of the Cathedral and its medieval buildings round the Close. These buildings are the finest example of a medieval row of houses in the south west. Both they and the Cathedral require work on a regular basis to restore and maintain them.

  9. Exeter Cathedral’s library and archives are one of the best kept cultural secrets of not only the county but also the country. We need to improve facilities - so that books, manuscripts and artefacts can be stored in a suitable environment - and the access to these historical treasures. £1 million will allow Phase 1 of this project to happen.

  10. Our two star exhibits are the Exon Domesday, which pre-dates the Domesday Book, and the Exeter Book, a10th Century collection of Anglo-Saxon poetry. We are also one of the only cathedrals to have its original charter, granted by Edward the Confessor to Bishop Leofric in 1050.

  11. ‘We always have the builders in!’ From our own stonemasons - here working on the stonework in the quire - and who still carve by hand, to specialist contractors: it all costs money.

  12. Exeter Cathedral holds treasures that could rival Salisbury’s Magna Carta, Hereford’s Mappa Mundi, and the renowned Book of Kells. With the right funding, we can create exhibitions that will increase access and visitors’ understanding of Exeter’s history.

  13. Walk into the Cathedral and you cannot help but ask, ‘just how did they build it?’ Whereas today there would be a veritable army of professionals, when the Cathedral was built it was down solely to the efforts of the master mason and his small team. And just look what they delivered!

  14. The choral tradition is dying out in parish churches. It still flourishes in the Cathedral, but only if we can secure enough funding to support the Cathedral’s musical tradition and the future of the gifted and talented children we are lucky to have as choristers.

  15. We have already raised well over £6.5 million toward the £8 million total. Our next target is £7 million. £8 million is an ambitious target but it is an achievable one, especially when broken down into a scale of giving.

  16. Not rocket science: your askers and/or choreographer need to have: • The instinct, attention to detail and perseverance of a detective – critical elements for prospect research • - An eye for the bigger picture as well as specific detail – essential when formulating the case for support, overall targets, prospect research strategy and table of gifts

  17. The ability to build instant rapport and gradually, trust • Influencing and negotiating skills – can you get your point/agenda across both subtly and effectively? • A good detector – is the person you’re talking to really a good prospect? • An ability to close – when it comes to it, are you able to ask the killer question directly and without hesitation? • - A natural instinct and flair for donor care coupled with a process driven approach – key for good stewardship

  18. Choreographing support - An unrelenting focus on those who can give (the most) - Identifying new gift prospects from the donor pool and elsewhere - Developing the donor base, as widely and generously as possible - Long term integration, becoming friends for life

  19. Potential Supporters • With whom will we dream dreams? • How do we raise aspiration externally while keeping internal expectation under control? • - Not only the usual suspects – who else can we reach?

  20. Socialising to win support: • Opening address books and houses • Holding receptions and events • Regular giving • Significant gifts • Match-funding • Legacies

  21. In summary • fundraising isn’t about: • - Disaster • - Emergency • - Stop and start • - Transient help • Smash and grab • Our fundraising is about: • - Development • - Vision • - Steady progress towards our goal • - Embedded in our community • An invitation to • ……..Join us on a journey
