Among the Hidden • By Margaret Peterson Haddix
Science Fiction • Takes place in the future • Government controls number of children each family can have and other important aspects of life • Warning at the end
Summary • Luke is a third child who is kept hidden from the world since he is illegal. He finds another third child in his neighborhood and finds out new information about the world he has been sheltered from. Luke must decide to continue living in hiding or to take risks and find out more.
Favorite Part • Jen, the other third child, reveals new information to Luke about the world and the government. This is also new information to the reader about strict laws about junk food and pets. I found this part interesting because it made me wonder what it would be like to live in this future society.
Connection • Text to world: New York City’s mayor attempted to enforce legislation about supersized soft drinks, much like Luke’s government banned potato chips. This real life event helped me because I was able to see how an absurd law like this could’ve started.
Extra challenge • This book changed the way I thought about the future and how the government controls our society. It made me think critically about the legislation that is being passed and worry about our future society.
Final thoughts • Not just for science fiction readers! • Check it out of the JDMS library today!
