Stephanie Lee CSUF EDSC 304 Fall 2009 Surface Area & Volume Unit
Unit Summary Topics • Surface Area • Volume • Unit Conversions (Scales) Activities • Lecture & homework • Gauging student needs assessment • Class Jeopardy Project • Scale Model
Main Content Standards Measurement and Geometry 2.0 Students compute the perimeter, area, and volume of common geometric objects and use the results to find measures of less common objects. They know how perimeter, area, and volume are affected by changes of scale Mathematical Reasoning 2.0 Students use strategies, skills, and concepts in finding solutions
Assess the reasonableness of the solutions to real-life situations Identify steps & patterns used to answer problems and apply them to newer, more complex problems Know and be able to apply necessary formulas to find surface area and volume Objectives Independently break down a complex problem and correctly progress through the steps to solve it. Use scale factors to find new surface areas and volumes Use understanding of scale factors and apply it to real-world situations
Goals Personal • Thoroughly gauge students needs and address them accordingly. Students • Confidently & accurately calculate Surface Area and Volume for all 3-D solids. • Understand pattern behind scales and unit conversions with respect to Surface Area and Volume.
Gauging Student Needs Assessment • Think-Pair-Share • Review past lessons that pertain to Surface Area Volume (Area & Perimeter) • Go over work with one other student; help each other correct and quiz one another • K-W-L • Self-report from students about what they know and don’t know • Students have a say in the direction of their learning
Project • To make the connection between classroom and real world and make applications. • To encourage students to develop essential 21st Century skills. • To build confidence in students.
Project Summary Assignment Skeleton With a partner, find a 3-D solid object at home that you can replicate on a larger or smaller scale. Record its measurements, surface area, and volume. • Students will convert measurements, surface area, and volume from cm to meters and kilometers. • Students will use given scales to find the measurements, surface area, and volume of a solid that would be similar to theirs. • Students will produce a scale model of their 3-D object.
