What is violence? • According to the Oxford English Dictionary, violence is described as “ a behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage or kill someone”. • Violence is a recurring problem. Starting with insults and ending with mutilation, violence against women is treated with silence, as violence against women is common and acceptable in some cultures.
The issues • Female genitalia mutilation (also known as female circumcision) • Domestic Violence
Female genitalia mutilation - FGM is a “medical” practice which involves removing (literally) a woman’s outer genitalia - Approximately 74 million women are affected by this issue worldwide - It is routinely done (as a “womanizing ritual”) in Africa and some places in Asia.

Domestic Violence • Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. • Women whose partners are mistreating them tend to keep their abuse from their friends and family a secret, in an attempt to protect their spouses.
