Best practices in reading • Reading for at least 20 minutes per day maintains reading level for most students. • Reading is most effective and meaningful when the child can discuss the reading with someone. • Reading a variety of genres, including nonfiction literature, contributes to a student’s background knowledge that can be applied to a future reading experience. • Use the “five word/finger per 100 words” guide to help choose a “just right” book. • Combining reading and writing strengthens both areas and makes the experience more meaningful and memorable. • Make reading fun, not a chore.
