  1. Reading It Well Making Sense of God’s Word

  2. Three Basic Steps • What did he say? (Observation) • What did he mean? (Interpretation) • What do I do with it? (Application)

  3. Application is putting the truth we discovered in interpretation into action.

  4. . 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NKJV) • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  5. Application • Is there a timeless truth or principle in the passage? • What specific steps of practice can we develop from the principles (application)?

  6. ONE interpretation – original intent • ONE OR A FEW principles • Potentially, MANY specific steps of obedience

  7. Developing the Truth or Principles Some passages are non-moral, non-theological subjects that have no “timeless truth” “See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!” (Gal. 6:11)

  8. Developing the Truth or Principles Many passages do address moral, theological subjects that do have “timeless truths” The goal is to discover the principles that are not limited to culture or circumstances.

  9. Some key questions to ask: What does the passage teach: About God? About man? About other people? About sin? What promises does it contain? What commands are to be obeyed?

  10. Developing the Applications If a major purpose of Scripture is “so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work,” then “application” is the step which changes my life and specifies what I need to do (obedience). Applications must be specific Applications apply to my culture and my circumstances. Applications can involve actions (Gal. 5:25), beliefs (Gal. 1:6-7), or attitudes (Gal. 5:26)

  11. Developing the Applications Seeing myself through God’s eyes Me God World Seeing the world I live in through God’s eyes

  12. Keep in mind: The heart of obedience is faith (Gal. 2:20, 3:2-3, 5:6) The “look” of obedience is love (Gal. 5:6, 13, 14, 22) The power for obedience is the Holy Spirit (Gal. 3:3, 5:16)

  13. Description of “How to walk in the Holy Spirit” (Gal. 5:16) Hearing the Word with faith then In faith, responding to Him

  14. Application Verse: Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Gal. 6:10) Interpretation: Paul commands the Galatians to do good to all people, especially other believers. Truth: Believers are to do good to all people, especially other believers. Applications: (1) I will take a meal to the family in my church who just had a baby. (2)
