What you NEED • A Sunny Spot on deep, well drained soil • Trellis System $$$$$ • Rhizomes $$ • Drop lines and somehow to hang them • Irrigation ??? • IPM – Weeds, Downey Mildew, Spider Mites • Harvesting – Hand picking is NOT FUN • Oast – 80% moisture down to 8% • Market to SELL THEM!!!! ( This should be FIRST)
Pest Management Strategies • Pest Management • Downey Mildew - Kocide3000, Phostrol • Flea Beatle and Spider Mites – Malathion • Sucker and Weeds – Chateau and Aim • Fertilizer Management • 2ndyr and beyond ~ 180lbs N, 80lbs P, 10lbs K/Ac • UAN (Liquid Ammonium Nitrate) • Accurate Record Keeping – Field Note Log • Field Map, Soil Test, Phonology, Fertilizer, Pests & Disease, Weather (by week), Harvest, Drying
Harvest by Hand in 2010 • Harvested 7 days on and off • 450 1st yr plants @ 12 min/plant = 90 man/hrs • 360 2nd yr plants w/ Hop-A-nator@ 5 min/plant = 30 man/hrs • Years 3 and 4 improved on picker
Current Harvest with Wolf Picker • 120 bines per hour! • Harvest my 1 acre in a 12 hour day
Oasting • Harvested cones need to be dried ASAP • 8-10% moisture is the target within 24 hrs after harvest without exceeding 120 degrees
