Subtraction… with Regrouping!!!
When you subtract, you should always start with the ones place and work your way to the left. In this problem, you would start with 9 - 2 in the ones place. 5 9 - 3 2 What is 9 - 2? 2 7 Next, you would subtract 5 - 3. What is 5 - 3?
When you look at the ones place, you won’t always be able to take the bottom number from the top number. You CANNOT flip the 3 and the 7 and subtract 7-3!!!!!!! This is what I call the “Flippy Flopper” and it DOES NOT GIVE YOU A CORRECT ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT BE A FLIPPY FLOPPER!! You would start by asking yourself, “Can I take 7 away from 3?” 5 3 - 3 7 No, you can’t take 7 away from 3. Since you can’t take 7 away from 3, you must regroup.
When you need to regroup, you go to the next place value to the left. 4 13 Here, you would take 1 (10) away from the 5 and make it a 4. 53 - 37 The 1 (ten) that you took from the 5 will add ten to the ones column making the 3 a 13.
Once you have regrouped, you can go ahead and subtract. 4 13 First, you would take 7 away from 13. 53 - 37 What is 13 - 7? Next, you would take 3 away from 4. 1 6 What is 4 - 3?
Let’s work through another couple problems! What should we do first? 7 14 So we need to go over to the tens place and take one group of ten from the 8 over to the ones place. Now, you subtract. What is 14 - 7? 8 4 First, we will subtract the ones. Can you take 7 away from 4? - 4 7 Then you subtract 7 - 4. What is 7 - 4? 3 7 Since you can’t take 7 away from 4, we will need to regroup. The one that we took from the 8 goes to the ones place and adds 10 to the 4 to make it a 14.
Let’s work through one more problem! What should we do first? 5 15 Now, you subtract. What is 15 - 8? 6 5 First, we will subtract the ones. Can you take 8 away from 5? - 2 8 So we need to go over to the tens place and take one group of ten from the 6 over to the ones place. Then you subtract 5 - 2. What is 5 - 2? 3 7 Since you can’t take 8 away from 5, we will need to regroup. The one that we took from the 6 goes to the ones place and adds 10 to the 5 to make it a 15.
REMEMBER NO FLIPPY FLOPPER!!!!!
