  3. 1. OBJECTIVES OF SSHRC RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAMS • Develop research skills • Assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel • Support Canada’s best graduate students and Postdoctoral researchers in the social sciences and humanities

  5. 1. FELLOWSHIP AWARD SUPPLEMENTS – Doctoral Level • Aileen D. Ross Fellowship Awarded to an outstanding SSHRC Doctoral award or Postdoctoral Fellowship holder conducting research in sociology, specifically for research on poverty • Queen’s Fellowship Awarded to one outstanding Doctoral Fellow entering a program in Canadian Studies in Canada • SSHRC William E. Taylor Fellowship Annual award for most outstanding SSHRC Doctoral recipient • Sport Participation Research Initiative

  6. 1. FELLOWSHIP AWARD SUPPLEMENTS – Postdoctoral Level • SSHRC Postdoctoral Prize Annual award for most outstanding SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship recipient • Aileen D. Ross Fellowship Awarded to an outstanding SSHRC Doctoral award or Postdoctoral Fellowship holder conducting research in sociology, specifically for research on poverty • Sport Participation Research Initiative To help support holders of SSHRC doctoral awards who are doing policy-relevant research on participation in sport in Canada

VANIER CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM • Tri-agency implementation of Budget 2008 announcement: • Valued at $50,000 per annum for up to 3 years • Nomination deadline: November 14, 2008 • Results announced: May, 2008 • 167 each year, divided equally (55/56 each) between SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR • Part of a new approach linked to the international branding of Canada

VANIER CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM (cont’d) • The approach is different than that of the Doctoral Awards program: • To be held only at nominating university - not portable • International students are eligible • 2-tier peer-review (SSHRC, high-level Selection Board) • One common, high-level “landing web page” and three similar program descriptions on each agency’s respective website: www.vanier.gc.ca

CGS FOREIGN STUDY SUPPLEMENTS • Valued at up to $6,000 • Designed to help offset the costs—including travel and accommodation—of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period of four to six months • Available only to holders of active CGS awards(Master’s, Doctoral or Vanier • Not renewable • One application form for all three agencies: • Deadline: December 10, 2008 • Program description available at the SSRHC website

  11. 3. J-ARMAND BOMBARDIER CGS MASTER’S PROGRAM

  12. 3. VALUE AND TENURE • $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable • Tenable only at a recognized Canadian university

ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada; • Be applying for support to pursue your first graduate degree and; • Not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study at the proposed start date of the award; • Have achieved a first-class average, • Not have already received an award for master's-level study from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR;

  14. 3. ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY (cont’d) • Not be applying for graduate funding in the 2008-09 academic year to NSERC or CIHR; • Not be pursuing a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees • Must have been registered at a university after January 1, 2004

  15. 3. ELIGIBILITY TO HOLD AN AWARD • Registered as a full-time Master’s student • Admitted, unconditionally, in a Master’s program that includes advanced research training • Must have completed all requirements for your Bachelor’s degree

  16. 3. WHEN AND WHERE TO APPLY • Application: • For applicants registered at a Canadian university in 2008: date set by university • For all others: November 27, 2008 • Results Announced: Spring 2009

  18. 3. EVALUATION CRITERIA • Academic excellence, 60% • Research potential, 30% • Communication skills, 10%

PROGRAM OF STUDY (max. of 2 pages) • Identify the university and degree program which you are pursuing or intend to pursue; • Outline clearly the research training component of the degree program • Provide a well-structured outline of your research proposal • Describe any work experience, community involvement or other extracurricular activity, if relevant to your research proposal

  20. 3.PROGRAM OF STUDY - Special Cases • Your proposed research is in Psychology • The output of your degree program is an artistic creation, rather than a thesis • Your program does not involve a thesis

  21. 3. RESEARCH TRAINING COMPONENT Your proposal must include a significant research training component. Research training normally involves: • demonstrating the ability to conduct research; and/or • completing course work in research methods and/or statistics; and/or • acquiring knowledge sufficient to interpret research in the field.

  22. 3. STATISTICS FOR 2008 AND AWARDS FOR 2009 • Statistics for 2008: • 2,686 applications recieved • 1,300 awarded • Total budget of 22.8 million dollars over one year • Number of awards available for 2009-10: 1,300

VALUE AND TENURE • J-Armand CGS Bombardier Doctoral Scholarships • $35,000 a year for 36 months • Can only be held at a recognized Canadian university • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships • $20,000 a year for up to 48 months • Can be held at a recognized university in Canada or abroad • You apply for both awards by completing one application form

  27. 4. ELIGIBLE PERIOD OF FUNDING • J-Armand Bombardier CGS: funds years of study • 1 to 3 • 2 to 4 • SSHRC Fellowship: funds years of study • 1 to 4 • 2 to 4 • 3 and 4 • 4 alone

ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada • Not have already received funding at the Doctoral level from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR • Be pursuing first PhD (or equivalent) • Undertaking doctoral studies or a combined MA/PhD program in the social sciences or humanities • Not be applying in the 2008-2009 academic year to NSERC or CIHR • Not be pursuing a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees

  29. 4. ELIGIBILITY TO HOLD AN AWARD • Registered as a full-time student • Unconditionally admitted in a PhD or combined MA/PhD program • Conducting research in an area that falls within SSHRC’s mandate

PROGRAM OF STUDY (max. of 2 pages) Entering first year of doctoral studies: • Clearly state your current level of study; • Give the title and a brief description of your master's thesis, if applicable; • Identify the degree program which you will pursue including any relevant courses and provide an explanation for your choice;  • Provide an outline of your doctoral thesis proposal, including the research question, context, objectives, methodology and contribution to the advancement of knowledge, and your special interests in the proposed area of research

PROGRAM OF STUDY (max. of 2 pages) Currently in a doctoral program: • Clearly state your current level of graduate study; • Indicate what stage you are at in your thesis; • Provide the name of your supervisor of doctoral studies, if known; • Provide an outline of your thesis proposal, including, for example, the research question, context, objectives, methodology and contribution to the advancement of knowledge; • Describe what you hope to accomplish during the award tenure and what will remain to be done before you obtain your degree.

  42. 5. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM

  43. 5. PURPOSE Funds can be used for the following purposes: • Undertaking original research • Publishing research findings • Developing networks of research contacts; and/or • Broadening research experience

  44. 5. VALUE AND TENURE • 12 to 24 months in duration • $38,000 per year plus a research allowance of up to $5,000 • Must be held at a recognized university or research institution

  45. 5. ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada • Have earned a first doctorate from a recognized university no earlier than October 2, 2005 (date all degree requirements were completed, not the date of graduation) • or have completed a first doctorate no earlier than October 2, 2002, but have had their career interrupted or delayed for the purpose of childrearing • Not hold a tenure or tenure-track faculty position • Have finalized arrangements for affiliation with a recognized university or research institution

ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY (cont’d) • Have applied not more than twice before for a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship • Not be applying in the 2008-09 academic year to NSERC or CIHR • Applicants wishing to hold their award at a foreign university may do so only if their PhD was earned at a Canadian university

ELIGIBILITY TO HOLD AN AWARD • Have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree • Engaged in full-time postdoctoral research for the period of the award • Conducting research in an area that falls within the SSHRC mandate • Not hold a tenure or a tenure-track position or any other employment
