  1. 9/7/10-Pick up your book & take out your magic square wkst from Friday to be checked. Do-Now: Create flashcards for the 16 terms listed on p. 182 of your book. Put the word on one side and the definition on the other. Any extra time should be spent STUDYING for your quiz (chemistry and macromolecules).

  6. 1/30/12- Define the following terms on a clean sheet of Paper. Title: Cellular Transport • Passive Transport-transport that does not require the use of energy • Diffusion • Osmosis • Facilitated Diffusion • Isotonic • Hypotonic • Hypertonic

  7. Cellular Transport Essential Questions: How does fertilizer affect the growth or death of plants? How would changing the environment of a fish from fresh to salt water affect its survival rate? Why is it so important to have the proper concentration of an “IV drip” while you are in the hospital?

  8. In your notes section: • Define SOLUTE and SOLVENT. • Highlight these definitions. They are VERY important!

  9. Cell Transport • Passive transport - particles move into and out of a cell without using any energy from the cell. • *Think of going down a slide…

  10. A. Diffusion - movement from areas of high concentration to lower concentration.

  11. B. Osmosis - diffusion of water across a membrane (1) isotonic - when concentration is equal on both sides of membrane

  12. (2) hypotonic - when the salt or solute concentration is low outside of cell. The water will move into the cell. The cell will swell. Animals cells can burst (cytolysis). Some animals have contractile vacuoles to remove excess water. Plant cells will be rigid (turgor)

  13. (3) hypertonic - when solute concentration is greater outside of the cell. The water will be pulled out of the cell. The animal cell will shrivel up (crenated). normal red blood cell crenated red blood cell

  15. C. Facilitated Diffusion -the transport of specific particles through a membrane by a carrier protein

  23. B. Sodium-Potassium Pump - The most important energy using process in your body. (1/3 of all the energy) For every 3 sodium ions (Na+) pumped out,two potassiumions(K+) are pumped in.

  24. C. Coupled channels -pulls food molecules (glucose) into the cell with the sodium ion
