QUESTION 1 • What do you study? • I studied at university (Sydney) ‘prehistory’ & now work as a professional archaeologist & deal with aboriginal & non-aboriginal history & archaeology.
QUESTION 2 • 2.What is your favorite task you’ve done so far? My favorite parts of my job are when I get survey land that is often bush land, & work with local aboriginal community which is great, & when I research the history of the places & people I get to have a look at before they are usually destroyed by development.
QUESTION 3 & 4 • 3.How long have you been studying archaeology? I did my undergraduate (B.A Hons) over 5 years with a year off before my final (thesis) year, & started a masters in archaeology about 7 years late before work & family got too busy. • 4.How many things have you studied? I studied other things at university as well as ancient history, historical archaeology & philosophy.
QUESTION 5 & 6 • 5.How long does it take to finish a task? Well It depends on what it is, a job can take a day or extend over many months if you have excavated a site and have a lot of artifacts to examine. • 6.Do you travel a lot for your job? I get to travel in mostly western & southern sydney now. I have worked in other states, and also ovrseas.
QUESTION 7 • 7. What does archaeology require skill wise? A good eye for detail & an ability to do research & ‘detective’ work in the library to figure out what may have happened at a place in the past ,when , how & by whom. But also you need to know how to respect people especially those who hold stories close to their heart. Respect is the key.
QUETSION 8 & 9 • 8.Why are you an archaeologist? It explains everything in one way or another . And now we have technology it helps us understand and explain the archaeological record which is the only tangible record of people in the past who didn’t write things down. • 9.What is your favorite thing about archaeology? Pretty much all of it.
QUESTION 10 & 11 • 10.Do you study a lot of things? I read a lot of things. Right now I’m fascinated by early colonial art. • 11.How do you document your work? I write lots of notes by hand, convert these into English on computer, and always take a million photos because you can with digital technology because its cheap.
QUESTION 12 • What is your favourite THING in archaeology? Seeing and touching something like an artefact that was probably last touched by a person many years ago.
