  2. Professions • Callings that require special knowledge, skill, and preparation

  3. Professionals • Individuals who have learned the knowledge and skills of a profession, but who also subscribe to the values/ethics of the particular profession

  4. Professionalism • These are the behaviors that reflect the profession’s knowledge, skills and values

  5. Professionhood • Person is socialized into the profession. However, this is ongoing process. • Knowledge, skills and values change.

  6. Characteristics • Allows members of an occupation to standardize and organize so that they meeth the necessary criteria. • Ultimate goal is to be recognized as a profession by non-members. • Recognition from society and from members of other professions

  7. Flexner’s Characteristics of a Professions # 1: Professions are basically intellectual

  8. #2: Professions are based on a specific body of knowledge that can be learned.

  9. #3: Professions are practical as well as theoretical.

  10. #4: Professional work can be taught through professional education

  11. #5: Professions have strong internal organization.

  12. #6: Practitioners are motivated by altruism.

  14. Occupations • An activity in which one engages. • Does not necessarily hold a special interest for the person • May be temporary

  15. Expectations for student professionalism at GBCN • Honor system • Academic policies • Clinical policies • Dress code • Drug free policies • Standards of conduct • Academic integrity • Social responsibility

  16. Mentorship in Nursing • Definition: A relationship in which an experienced individual (mentor) advises and assists a less experienced individual (mentee or protégé) • Rewarding for both parties. Eases new nurses or nurse climbing the professional ladder into the functions/beliefs of a new role.

  17. Characteristics of an effective mentor • Gives upward mobility to your career • Boosts self-esteem by believing in you • Shares your dreams • Provides advice, counsel and support

  18. Effective Mentor • Teaches by example • Introduces you to the corporate structure, players and politics • Imparts valuable information • Gives feedback on your progress
