Answers – 23 56 Convex Concave INTRODUCTION Students aren’t allowed to use their cell phones during class, but they still do it. How can you detect when a student is using their cell phones during class without permission? Teachers don’t know who, or when their students are using their cell phones, and that’s creating many problems. Students could be using their cell phones to cheat on tests, text inappropriately things to one another, or play games on it.

Tech Experience For all of us this has been another exciting year working with the Tech Wizzes. We learned that to create a signal, you’ll need a square wave, sine wave, and a pulse wave form. Also we’ve learned that for a detector to be able to detect something, it’ll need a signal, and detectors and signals need each other to be able to function well. Another thing the Tech Wizzes learned this year was that China uses cell phones to lock in answers to a question in class when there are many students in a class.

PROBLEM Cell phones are not allowed in school. However, students still use them during school. What if teacher's could detect when cell phones are being used in their classrooms or in the school building? Some students ignore the rules of cell phones, and still use them. How can teachers stop students from using their phones during class without permission?
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • Solution A: We are going to solve the problem by creating a router that could detect if a student is using their cell phone during class. Therefore, if they are using the cell phone during class the router will sensor the text or phone call, and inform the teacher right away. • Solution B: Creating a gadget that is similar to a memory card that students could put in their phones, and it will signal the teachers if students are using their phones during a lecture in a e-mail. • Solution C: Have a program in the school’s website that students will have to put their cell phone number in so when the cell phones are turned on during school hours the teachers will automatically know who are using their cell phones.
FINAL SOLUTION • Solution A • Something that could be built • Easier to understand what we are doing • Have fun creating it! We Nailed You Down!!!
Our Research • What’s Bad About Using Cell Phones During Class? • Cell Phone Usage • Cell Phone Policies • What Are Signals? • What Creates Signal? • How Can We Transmit A Signal? • Types Of Signals • What Are Detectors? • Types Of Detectors • Tying Together Signals & Detectors • Understanding The Inside Of A Cell Phone • Main Components In A Cell Phone
WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT USING CELL PHONES DURING CLASS? I Can’t Help It! • Reasons Why Cell Phones Are Banned: • Texting • Meeting with schoolmates • Cheating • Playing games • Contacting parents
CELL PHONE USAGE • Private Schools: • Highland Park (USA) • Montgomery County (USA) • Most school in China (As Clickers) • South Africa Schools Uses Cell Phones
CELL PHONE POLICIES AT SCHOOL • Los Angles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, San Diego, and Dallas. • Phones NOT SEEN NOR HEARD • Phones will be confiscated • Result in suspension • No students/teachers use cell phones during school hours Cell Phone Policy Students/ Teachers can’t use cell phones
WHAT ARE SIGNALS? • Any quantity measurable through time or space • Type of message • The text of which consists of one or more letters, words, characters, signal flags, visual displays, or special sounds with prearranged meaning • Transmitted by visual, acoustical, or electrical means. • Electrical waves transmitted through the air to another place • ALL signals must have a “period”, “frequency” and “stimulus” • Period – time to create a electric wave • Frequency – number of waves created in a second • Stimulus – quickens action, thought etc… T.V.
WHAT CREATES A SIGNAL? • Sine Waves – Energy transmitted one place to another (most common in a signal) (Picture Of A Sine Wave) • Square Waves – Used as stimulus in a system (Picture Of Square Wave) • Pulse Wave Forms – Similar to square waves but only works on top-axis of signal (Picture Of Pulse Wave Forms)
HOW CAN YOU TRANSMIT A SIGNAL? • Sends invisible voltage • Needs a command to send the message • Needs a “beginning” and a “ending” • Different types of ways to send a signal • Hand gestures, movements, voice, electricity, etc. Router #1 Router #2
TYPES OF SIGNALS • Types Of Signals: • T.V. Signal • Communication Signals • Cell Phone • Rail Road Signals • Traffic Lights • Wireless Internet • Fire Pit Signals
HALT! I Detect YOU Are Using A Phone!!!! D:< WHAT ARE DETECTORS? • Any device that receives a signal or stimulus (as heat or pressure or light or motion etc.) and responds to it in a distinctive manner • Helps find things • Recovers information of interest contained in a modulated wave • Detectors = Sensors • Example of detector – metal detector
TYPES OF DETECTORS • Cell Phone Busters • Radiation Detector • Thermionic Detectors • Gas Ionization Detectors • Photocathode Detectors • Semiconductor Detectors • Particle Detectors • Smoke Detectors Radiation Detector Gas Ionization Detector
TYING TOGETHER SIGNALS & DETECTORS • For a detector to detect it needs to signal things • Detector commands a signal once it has what its looking for • Detector commands a signal to go some place • Signals need to be detected to be created a signal • For a signal to be created it needs a router to command it Signals & Detectors Go Hand & Hand Working Together!!!
