Problem:Have you ever wonder why the font color on tests is black? Why not blue, pink, green, or the most outrageous colors out there today?
Research: Black • goes with any color • serious • used in everything such as newspapers, books, tests, and newspaper • . www.about.com.
Experimental Variable • different colored fonts I selected Experimental Groups • pink, blue, yellow, green ,orange, red, and purple Control Group • Black font is my control group.
Control Variables- environment • Lighting in the room where the test subjects are being tested • No distractions in room • Accuracy of person stopping stop watch • Noises in room, heating ventilation
Control Variables- reading material • List of 90 words use 45 words at a time. • The paper on which the words are printed on • The printer that printed words • Same font Times New Roman • Same size 12 pt
Control Variables- subjects • Eight hours of sleep the night before • New pair of contacts, if the person wears contacts • 14-18 years old
Procedure: Step 1. Hand a person a list of words with blue letters Bedroom Television Purses Computer Appraisal Basement Printer Flowers Closet Frequency Coffee Porch Newspaper Lights Abbreviate Graduate Accomplish Gruesome Actually Hideous Admit Illustrate Affirmative Integrate Ballot Jalapeño Banquet Journalism Bedroom Candle Kitchen Electric Bathroom Television Basement Telephone Porch Toaster Chair Microwave Shopping Printer Garage Nominate Microwave Shopping Tree Picture Remote Notebook Chair Website Toaster Telephone Fireplace Soldier
Procedure: Step 2. Have the person start reading when you count to “3”, that’s when you should start stopwatch Step 3. Stop the stopwatch when the person raises his or her hand. Step 4. Repeat the experiment another 4 times with the same color. Step 5. Repeat steps 1-4 for each person but use a list of the same words in a different color and a different order. Step 6. Repeat steps 1-4 using black lettering, this is my control group.
Seconds Colors
Conclusion In conclusion, my data does not support my hypothesis. Therefore, I reject my hypothesis that black font will let a reader read faster.
Changes: • I would make sure to have a stopwatch and person for each individual test subject. • I would have more test subjects to make sure my data was valid. • I would make sure that my test subjects did not communicate.
Further Research: • I found out that black ink was the cheapest to make and the color ink that has been around for the longest, which to me showed that people were more used to dark color.
