The Transition to Ninth Grade is a Process Not an Event-Jay Hertzog
Graduation Requirements 4 credits of English 4 credits of Mathematics One math credit must be taken during the student’s senior year 3 credits of Laboratory Science 4 credits of Social Studies 1 credit of Physical Education ½ credit of Health Education 3 credits in a Career Pathway 2 ½ Elective credits
Benefits • Smooth Transition from 8th grade to 9th grade. (Hybrid Schedule) • Allows all students to take math all year within a block. (SREB Report) Promotes depth of instruction with additional class time for guided practice of learning. • Maintain the semesterized block for science and social studies. (Lessens student load/Promotes depth of instruction) • Allows all students to take ELA all year. Maintains 2 elective periods.

Career/Interest Pathways • A planned program of sequenced or specialized courses designed to develop knowledge and skills in a particular career area. • 3 credits in a Career Pathway are required for graduation. • The Career Pathway is not a life-long career choice and may not necessarily be something a student would like to pursue following graduation from high school.

Scheduling Process • High school counselors will visit the middle schools in April. • Counselors will visit EMMS on April 2nd and RMS on April 3rd to present course selection information to the 8th grade ELA classes. • A Scheduling Information Night will be held at the high school in April. • Counselors will return to EMMS on April 17th and RMS on April 18th to answer questions and collect course requests.
Transitioning • Parent Preview Night – Tonight • Student Preview Program – 9th grade students • Mix It Up/Combined Field Day (including MOT Charter School and St. Anne students) – June 4, 2007 • 9th Grade Summer Social – August 22, 2007 • Logistics and additional activities TBD
PBS • Maintain the current PBS system as it exists at MHS. • Expectations: Character, Attitude, Vision, and Success • Ticket system for reinforcement • Establish a 9th grade sub-committee to oversee program. • Review 9th grade discipline for planning purposes • Use RMS Fishes and MMS Sigma Rho as student leaders.
Advisory Period • Implement a structured, designed curriculum which sets the stage for a comprehensive advisory program, grades 9-12. • 9th grade – Character Development • To meet regularly, i.e. weekly, bi-weekly.
