BIOGRAPHY • He was born in Cartagena (Murcia) in 1831 • He died in Madrid in 1898 • Between 1850 and 1855 He studied natural sciences in the Complutense University of Madrid. He specialized in zoology, mainly in amphibians. • In 1857, He was an assistant in the Museum of Natural Sciencies of the Court, today called the Museum of Natural Sciences
What did he do? • He is one of the most important Spanish scientists in the XIX century. • Between 1850 and 1856 he studied natural sciences in the Complutense University of Madrid. Marcos Jiménez specialized in zoology, mainly in amphibians. • In 1857 He was an assistant in the Museum of Natural Sciences of the Court, today the Museum of Natural Sciences.
“Comisión del Pacífico” • The Commission of Pacific was the most important expedition during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
“COMISIÓN DEL PACÍFICO” • Marcos Jiménez de la Espada was a member of Commission Científica del Pacífico in 1862. • This commission departed from the port of Cádiz , with two ships: The Triunfo and the Resolution. The route was: • 1st The Canary Islands • 2nd.-Cape Verde • 3th.- Coast of Brazil • 4th.-Uruguay. Here, this commission was divided in two: • A) A group went to the south coast. • B) Jiménez de la Espada and two colleagues made another trip called the Great trip.
The Great Trip • The Great Trip was to cross Ecuador up to the Amazon river . • During this trip, he studied mainly the volcanoes.
What was the reason for this project ? • This project was created to pick up different materials from South America. • These materials were deposited in: • 1º.- The Natural Sciences Museum and • 2º.- The Botanical Garden • They wanted to analyze the history, geography and anthropology of the American continent.
The Return Journey • This Commission returned to Cádiz on 21st December 1865.
WHAT DID JIMENEZ DE LA ESPADA WRITE? • When Jiménez de la Espada returned to Spain, he wrote: • -The Pacific trip ´s vertebrates: batrachians • - The Indians letters • - Ausango volcano • -Observations about habits of bats • -And others
