  1. Neptune In this fact file you will learn about Neptune and why it is unique as a planet. Then you will get a quiz on what you learnt.

  2. Table of contents • Why it was found • Name and History • Moons • Quiz

  3. Why it was found Neptune was found when astronomers realised that Uranus wasn’t following its orbit and decided that there must be a larger planet pulling it of course with its gravity. Two scientists, one called John Couch Adams (1819-1892) another named Urbain Le Verrier (1811-1877) managed to track down exactly where it was. In the end only Le Verrier managed to get a astronomer to find it.

  4. Moons • Neptune has thirteen known moons. • The largest moon Triton is the only known moon in our solar system that orbits its planet the opposite way the planet rotates. • Some scientists believe Triton isn't one of Neptune's original moons but was once in orbit of the sun but was pulled into orbit by Neptune’s gravitational pull unlike Nereid which scientists say is probably a original moon of Neptune. • Triton is what's known as a regular satellite. • Triton has active geysers.

  5. Name and History • Neptune was named after the roman god of the sea because of it’s blue colour. • Since Neptune was first seen from earth in1846 it has only made one orbit around the sun. it completed the orbit in 2011. This photo from the 1989 voyager 2 shows the Great Dark Spot and the second dark spot all the features have now vanished
