A narrative tells a story. It may be: • an event from the writer’s past • a recent or an ongoing experience • an event or ordinary experience from everyday life A narrative essay is usually written in chronological order. Very often, the past tense is used when writing narrative essays.
Language Focus in a story: • Adjectives to describe setting and characters • Adverbs to describe actions • Sensory words to describe sights, smells, sounds etc.
Relevant Terms & Elements of a Story • Theme - It is the main idea of the story that tells a message or lesson. • Plot – This relates to the action and events in the story. • Characters – They are people or animals that have roles in the story. • Climax – The most interesting part of the story; conflicts and problems are solved.
Relevant Terms & Elements of a Story • Setting – This refers to the place and time in which events take places in the story. • Mood – This refers to the feelings that are expresses in the story; should touch readers’ feelings. • Tone – It refers to the author’s attitude.
