  2. Goals FOR THIS seminar… • Your HS Transcript - Is it correct? How do I release it/request it/send it off? • Graduation Requirements – are you going to get it done by the end of May? • Testing – ACT + SAT + AP • What are you going to do after you graduate? (May 29th 2014 - FYI) - 4 year College/University - 2 year Community College - Technical School - Military (Talk to your recruiters) - Work/Apprenticeship - GAP Year • Applying to College • - Finding the best fit for you… • How are you going to pay for Life After High School?

  3. The Senior Checklist… It’s blue – put those dates in your phones asap!

  4. Your high school transcript… • Check it over and complete the Transcript Info Sheet (salmon colored) • Turn it into the Counseling Office by Friday. Sept. 13th • Your corrected info is used to calculate your GPA (6 semesters) and corresponding Class Rank. Our Goal is to have this finalized information available to you, and to be sent out to schools, by the first week of October.

  5. Graduation requirements letter… • Check it over, get it signed, and turn it into the Counseling Office by Friday. Sept. 13th • These are the courses you need to pass in order to graduate on May 29th, 2014 • If you have questions/concerns about this letter and courses listed (like you are not taking one this year) you need to see your school counselor – Graduation Requirements are Your Responsibility! • Turn in your Wellness C forms ASAP(Band or Sport)

  6. Sending off your HS transcript… • Student and Parent sign the white “Authorization for Release of Transcripts” form and turn it into the Counseling Office by Friday. Sept. 13th • Transcripts must be sent from the school in order to be considered official – students request these to be sent through Ms. Bentley • See the orange “Requesting Counselor and Teacher Recommendations” Date Reminders… • How to use the log-in-book + ½ sheets transcript request forms in Mrs. Bentley’s (ORHS Registrar) Office • Online Transcripts (ex. Common App) VS mailed • DEADLINE, DEADLINES, DEADLINES!

If your school counselor needs to complete any documentation and/or include a letter of recommendation with the hard copy of your transcript, please include this in your stamped envelope addressed to the school to which you are sending. ORHS will take care of adding the return address

  8. testing… what you need to know • Pay attention to what test(s) you need for college admission (ACT? SAT? Subject Test?) and which AP courses the school accepts/score needed • Check schools Scholarship Info for guaranteed $ based on ACT/SAT + GPA • ACT/SAT scores must be sent from the testing agency to colleges and the NCAA. Schools typically accept either but may prefer one or the other • The cost of the ACT/SAT test allows you to send scores to four schools – there is a fee to send it out to more (this is done through ACT or SAT) • College Admissions Counselors say they are looking at the students best scores (but not all schools “super-score”) • Does your college let you test out of certain subjects and earn retroactive credits for taking a higher level course (ex. World Languages)?

What are you going to do after you graduate? • 4 year College/University - Public VS Private, In-State VS Out-of-State SELECTIVE-SCHOOL SEMINAR is Thurs. 9/26 before or after school in the Amphitheater! • 2 year Community College (ex. PSCC or RSCC) - Associates Degree for TRANSFER or CAREER • Technical School (http://www.ttcknoxville.edu/full-time-programs ) - Program last from 2 to 20+ months+ waiting lists • Military - Talk to your recruiters, ROTC programs • Work/Apprenticeships

  10. Applying for Post-secondary education… • Institutional Application VS Common Application (App) • Early Decision(Binding!) VS Early Action (Single-Choice or not) VS Regular Decision • NCAA – if you considering competing in college athletics at the Division 1 or 2 level, you need to see Ms. Bentley in the Counseling Center for required forms and qualification information • Have a separate/professional email address for college apps • The back of the Bright ORANGE sheet as all ORHS contact information to use on your applications

  11. “COLLEGE IS A MATCH TO BE MADE, NOT A PRIZE TO BE WON.”FINDING YOUR BEST “MATCH or FIT” • Educational Match… Does the school offer programs that match your interest and needs? Does the academic rigor fit your aptitude/preparation? • Geographical Match… Close to home or a different part of the country? • Social Match… Big School? Small School? Greek Life? Commuter School? • Spiritual Match… Does it offer a community that feels like home? • Financial Match…In-State VS Out-of-State tuition, Public VS Private, Aid • Fight the temptation to focus only on “name brand” schools • “There are no bad colleges, just bad matches”

  12. So – you need a letter of recommendation… Ask the counselor or teacher at least 3 weeks prior to the deadline and make sure we have your student information sheet, resume, and two or more confidential teacher comment forms!

How to pay for all this? • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) – Jan 1st 2014 • Your Financial Aid Package – what the school puts together based on your FAFSA Expected Family Contribution(EFC) • - Scholarships, Grants, Work-Study, Loans • TN Lottery HOPE Scholarship (Private/Public/4yr/2yr) • TN Achieves Program (2 yr Community Colleges) – Oct. 4th Deadline – complete application at www.tnachieves.org • Local Scholarships + Green Scholarship Sheets (web, facebook, English) • Academic Common Market (http://www.sreb.org/page/1304/academic_common_market.html ) • - Attend the ORHS College Financial Aid Seminar on Dec. 3rd

  15. Need a mock interview? Make an appointment with the counseling center secretary to set up a practice interview with a couple of counselors before you do it for real…

  16. What else… • Take a look at the Worksheet on the back of the Sr. Checklist • Senior Checklist Dates… Please share these with your Family! • ORHS College Fair – Mon. Sept. 30th 6-7:30 pm Wildcat Arena – make labels with your contact info to save time when talking to schools • If you haven’t already, start visiting schools – Fall Break works - if you can’t get there, check the school’s site. Demonstrated Interest is used when making admissions decisions (so write thank you emails, etc.) • Highly-Selective College Meeting on Thurs. Sept.26th before (7am) or after (3:10pm) in the ORHS Amphitheatre – lots of info about admissions procedures, college essays, recommendations, resumes… will be covered. • Make an appointment with your Counselor regarding your post-high school plans – have your parents/family join you. Don’t forget to enjoy the ride!
