Yeats strived to be authentically Irish but not Catholic. • He sought to cultivate Irish tradition separate from Protestantism or Catholicism.
In 1889, Yeats met Maud Gonne. He wrote of the meeting: “the troubling of my life began.”
Yeats was attracted to Gonne's outspoken nature and beauty. He became infatuated with her which influenced his work for the remainder of his days. She admired him but never returned his love.
Yeats had a life-long fascination with the occult. In 1890, Yeats joined the Golden Dawn, a group dedicated to the practice and study of the occult.
He took the "magical motto" Festina Lente (Make haste slowly) originally and eventually changed to Demon est Deus inversus (The demon is the reverse of god).
In 1911, he became a member of "The Ghost Club", a paranormal research organization, which still exists today. • "The mystical life is the centre of all that I do and all that I think and all that I write."
Yeats was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood in his early days but due to the rising tensions of the political landscape, he distanced himself from politics. He even refrained from releasing poetry inspired by the events of the time until 1920.
Yeats married Georgie Hyde-Lees on October 20th, 1917. A few years after marriage, he found the name Georgie to be unsuitable and began to call her George. Just a few weeks earlier, Yeats proposed to Iseult Gonne, daughter of Maud Gonne.
On their honeymoon, his wife began to engage in automatic writing. This fascinated Yeats and became a key point that held their marriage together.
Yeats died on January 28th, 1939 in Menton, France. He wanted a discreet funeral, which he received. "If I die bury me up there and then in a year's time when the newspapers have forgotten me, dig me up and plant me in Sligo." His body was moved in 1948, the person in charge was son of Maud Gonne, Sean MacBride.
