LIGHT SOL 5.3 By: Travis Humble, Langley Elementary
Light • Light does not need matter to travel. • Light travels in waves called transverse waves. • Light travels very fast. It is the fastest thing in the universe, traveling at 186,282 miles per second or 670,616,629 miles per hour in a vacuum. Light travels a bit slower through matter.
Light is FAST!! Distance from Earth to the moon: 238,857 miles Time it takes light to travel in between: 1.2 seconds *The sun is 93 million miles from Earth and it only takes 8.3 minutes for the sun’s light to reach Earth* **Distance between objects in space are so far that distance is measured in Light-Years, or, how far light travels in one year (1 Light-Year = about 6 trillion miles).
Spectrum • White light is actually made of 7 colors. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Remember ROY G BIV R (ed) O (range) Y (ellow) G (reen) B (lue) I (ndigo) V (iolet)
To see the 7 colors of light as a spectrum, we need to bend, or refract, white light. This can be done with a prism.
Color • When light hits an object, some colors are absorbed and some colors are reflected. • We see the colors that are reflected.
Color • Darker materials absorb more colors (and heat) than lighter materials. • Lighter materials reflect more colors (and heat) than darker materials. • White is the reflection of all colors. • Black is the absorption of all colors.
