Naming Ions Topic #15: EQ: What are the guidelines to naming the different types of ions?
What is an Ion? • An ion refers to an atom that has lost or gained electrons, thus resulting with a leftover charge. • Ions with a positive charge are called cations. • Ions with a negative charge are called anions.
Naming Ions • Naming positive ions is easy: • For Example: • Ca refers to the calcium atom. • Ca2+ refers to the calcium ion. • Did you see the difference?
Naming ions • Negative ions are a bit different… • For example: • S refers to the Sulfur atom • S2- refers to the sulfide ion • What is the difference? • FOR anions you must drop the ending of the atom name and add –ide
POLYATOMIC IONS • Poly…what??/ • What is this? Consult with your shoulder partner and come up with your own explanation. • Polyatomic Ions are a group of atoms that as they try to stabilize themselves by bonding with each other…they still have a leftover charge. • For example: CO32- this is known as the carbonate ion. • As carbon and oxygen atoms try to stabilize each other by bonding together, sometimes they end in this scenario where one carbon atom bonds with 3 oxygen atoms, yet they still have a leftover -2 charge. • The good news is that for these type of ions you do not have to do anything to their name. You will given a table with the most common polyatomic ions.
Polyatomic Ions • More examples: • NO3- is the nitrate ion • NO2- is the nitrite ion • SO42- is the sulfate ion • Most of the polyatomic ions have negative left over charges, theres only one exception: • NH4+ is the ammonium ion
